Pilot Training UK

I have been flying in the UK for over 20 years now and really love the excitement of learning to fly here. I say learn, after all these years, because you can never learn it all. I flew with a retired airline captain today, he has over 9,000 hours experience on passenger jet aircraft, and he is still learning too. So I have no excuse! So, is the UK the best place for you to get training on how to be a pilot?

Let’s do the weather point first. Being optimistic, if you don’t like the weather in the UK, just wait a few hours and you will have some different weather on its way to you. Joking aside, the UK can have some of the most changeable weather on the planet. The reason is quite straight forward, it is all due to our location where may different types of air mass meet up.

So think of the UK as a melting pot for all of these different conditions. It can mean that there are days on which you cannot complete any pilot training. But looking back 20 years in my log books, I can see that I regularly fly every month of the year.

On the day that I wrote this piece, we had a lovely summer’s day. In the UK midlands, Cloud soon bubbled to about 5,000 feet as the temperature reached 25 Celcius, and this was influenced by some gentle westerly wave patterns over twice as high. Showers then formed over much larger parts of the UK, but our airfield remained dry as a bone. Pilot Training carried on just as it did in January this year with nearly a metre of snow on the fields around us. So, very much a year round operation.

Enough about the Midlands, where else can you fly in this beautiful country. Why not take a trip up to the mountains of Scotland, where your training can give you daily views of some of the most stunning scenery, along with some of the most challenging flying conditions, all year round. If you prefer a quieter life, why not look at the fantastic south west with several schools available to teach you how to be a pilot in Devon and Cornwall?

There are many not so obvious places in the UK to complete pilot training, the London airports are pretty full, and most discourage or ban light training aircraft. I hope that this short introduction to pilot training in the UK has whetted your appetite for more information on the subject. So come and join over 20,000 current pilots in continuing to learn the art form that is being a pilot in the UK
