Are Amber Teethng Necklaces Really A Hazard to Babies?

When I got pregnant I have to tell you I was scared and not at all ready for it. I knew nothing about babies or how to take care of a baby. Heck, I have barely even held a baby in my entire life! Clearly had some learning to do so learning I did. I read book after book on pregnancy and babies. I also joined a natural mothering forum on Facebook which has been my saving grace from the beginning. This forum has thousands of intelligent, educated mothers who will help with any question you have, parenting or otherwise. Through the forum I started hearing about amber teething necklaces. According to many of these mothers, amber teething necklaces have made enormous changes to their teething little ones. Curiosity struck me, so my research began.

It was easy to find research on them, apparently they are pretty popular not just among the natural lifestyle families but it's recognized by allopathic medicine as well. Clearly these must do something if homeopathic and allopathic medicine agree on something! :) I made my purchase when my son was 2 months old and he has been wearing it nonstop since 3 months old. The recommendations are not to sleep in them and watch your baby closely when wearing at a young age, but I must say it has never been an issue for us, he doesn't even notice it. We do co-sleep though so I am very aware of him at night.

A recent article in the New York Times claims that the necklaces are a strangulation and choking hazard. The writer claims, "According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suffocation is the leading cause of death for children under a year old and among the top five causes of death for children between the ages of 1 and 4" That may be true but how is that actually connected to amber necklaces? It isn't. There is absolutely no evidence or even records of children dieing from choking or suffocation from a teething necklace. This is simply an attempt by a skeptic to scare parents into not using them. The writer later goes on to suggest a pain reliever such as Tylenol. Well Tylenol carries more risk than any teething necklace would. A parent is who wants to remain natural and avoid medications for their children will not want to give Tylenol anyways.

If you choose to remain a skeptic then that is your right but it's not fair to try to scare parents out of trying a very successful teething remedy which their is no evidence proving that it is dangerous. In the article the write states "Vendors of Baltic amber necklaces commonly advertise that the necklaces are safe because the string is knotted between each individual bead, so if the necklace breaks only one piece will fall off. But one loose bead is enough for a child to choke on." Well this very situation happened to me. The necklace broke while I was taking it off to put coconut oil on my baby and only 1 bead fell off. They are strung and knotted extremely well as long as you make sure you are buying an authentic necklace. And for the choking part, well those beads are so little I could barely find it, so the chance of my 5 month old finding and swallowing it before I do is pretty slim. Be a smart parent and make sure your child is attended when wearing them and then you won't need to worry about it.

All in all I am a strong advocate for amber teething necklaces and my son has been a happy fussy free baby since he has worn it. I am proud to have him wear it and I educate people on them whenever asked and I will not let someone scare me into thinking it's a hazard. Lots of things around you are potential hazards to your baby, just be an attentive parent and there will be no problems.

Take a chance and try one, you won't regret it! :)
