Baby Swimming Lessons

Living in Southern California pools are common, requiring pool safety from a very young age. My husband was very keen to start baby swimming lessons with our daughter as early as possible. Personally, I thought starting around the age of 2 was reasonable, but my husband had other ideas! Teagan began taking swimming lessons at 7 months. I asked around, and did some research and found a swim school that specialized in teaching babies and children how to swim.

The idea of teaching a 7 month old how to swim seems ludicrous, but having been a participant, it’s truly remarkable. Although you don’t see a lot of changes for a longer period of time, the simple lack of water fear is fantastic. There have been plenty of toddlers in the 2-3 age range that have regular meltdowns at swim lessons.

Baby Swimming Tips

• Research your potential trainer

• Use a trainer that specializes in the age group your child fits into

• Follow their instructions for personal pool time

• Give yourself and your child time

• Be dedicated

While researching swimming lesson options, I looked for a school that specialized in babies and small children. I went to the school to see what type of training technique they used and spoke with my childs potential trainer. I asked for the steps and stages of training and their recommendation for success.

The first steps were getting my daughter used to being in a pool, going under water and feeling comfortable with her trainer. The part I liked the least was getting in the pool myself, however until she was at a stage of sitting in the pool on her own, that was part of the commitment. The beauty of starting lessons at this early of an age is they haven’t been out of the womb that long. Holding your breath is a natural instinct and floating around in warm water isn’t a foreign idea.

I was able to sit with my legs in the pool when my daughter was 14 months, 7 months of pool time and I was ready to get out. At 22 months, I sit next to the pool on the bench, close enough to get to her if I need to, but far enough to give her some independence.

When it comes to personal pool time, we kept it limited at first and did not try any of the techniques the trainer was doing with her. We also did not put floaties on her. We just held her in the water at first. By the time she was 15 months my husband and I would push her between us, using the style suggested by our trainer.

At 22 months, we are about to take a vacation that will include a lot of pool time. Our daughter loves her swim lessons and loves putting her head underwater and puttering around. At this stage she puts her head underwater in the bathtub and gets her arms and legs going! She isn’t fully swimming on her own, once we get those legs under control she’ll be off to the races. She has learned to orient herself while under water and head towards the pool edge. By the time she’s 2 I’m confident she’ll be able to swim the shorter distance between edges of her training school pool. It’s amazing, considering I wasn’t even thinking to start her lessons until the ripe old age of 2!

Baby Swim Diapers

The training school requires 2 swim diapers on all children under the age of 4. We are not talking about the disposable swim diapers either, but actual cloth diapers specifically designed for swimming. I utilize 2 swim diapers and a rash guard, or a baby swimming suit and a swim diaper.

I’ve been a particular fan of Tuga Swim Diapers, and have continued to use this brand as we move up in sizes. I’ve added swimsuits from Old Navy and Target as well as Carter’s. When it comes to stripping a wet baby of a wet suit, it is easier to peel off 2 swim diapers and a rash guard versus a regular girls swimsuit.

Baby Swimming Video

Now that I can sit on the side lines I try and video Teagan’s lessons periodically to share with family, but also for her to see when she’s older. There are so many milestones to try and capture for our children, and a video of her swimming seems like a golden opportunity.
