Bathing Your Baby Safely, What Every Parent Needs To Know

It is impossible to over emphasize the potential dangers involved when bathing a small baby or child. The number of babies burnt or injured from bathing is very concerning and sadly the number drowning in the bath is alarming. An infant or small child can drown in as little as one inch of water and for this reason you must never leave your child in the bath unsupervised, not even for a second to grab a towel or a diaper.

The speed at which an accident can happen is all to fast and some thing most people do not fully appreciate.

Never leave your baby with an older child watching them, no matter how mature and responsible they seem they are simply not able to respond in the case of an accident and would not have the knowledge needed to prevent serious injury or even death before alerting you to a problem.

Always think ahead and arrange everything you need before beginning bath time with your baby, this reduces any chance of quickly leaving to get the cleansers or diapers. If you forget something simply take your child out of the bath and retrieve it together, even if it's the towel, get wet you will always dry off, better to be safe than sorry.

Ignore the telephone or the door, if it's important they will call back, nothing rivals the safety of your baby. If you really must respond then take your baby out of the bath and with you to respond. Better to resume the bath later than leave your child alone and at risk.

Always check the bath water as a baby can not withstand the heat an adult can. Use a thermometer or your elbow before placing your baby in the water and if you need to top up the water remove your baby from the hot water faucet. Burns can happen very quickly on a baby's delicate skin.

As your baby grows do not allow them to stand in the bath, it is all too easy for them to slip and suffer a head injury, they can easily slip under the water and in this way water enters the lungs. You should be mindful of how slippery a bath can be, support a small baby firmly even in a baby bath, for older babies use a rubber mat that prevents them from slipping. Tiled floors are also hazardous, make sure you lift your child out and place them on a dry non slippery surface before you attempt to dry them.

Don't over fill the bath keep it shallow, no more than a few inches is sufficient for your baby to sit in. If you are using shampoos or cleansers do so at the end of the bath reducing the chances of slipping and the amount of time your child is exposed to possible irritants to their skin.

A third degree burn can easily be received from hot water from a faucet, as the temperature of most household water heaters are beyond what a baby's skin can tolerate. Always put cold water in first and top up with hot to get a safe temperature. It is easy to leave pockets of hot water otherwise. Never run the hot tap and leave your toddler unsupervised they can all to easily tumble into the scalding water. Never for the same reason top up the bath with running water whilst your baby is in the bath.
