You might read the title to this article and think to yourself "how to make my baby sick-proof? Well, my baby doesn't get sick ....." Well, the truth of the matter is that, sooner or later, they will. Whether it's when they start daycare (to all us working moms out there), or when they start school, they will get sick! This is the hard reality that I had to deal with when my baby girl started daycare at 10 months old. I was lucky enough to stay home with her the first 5 months, and then had a nanny another 5 months until she decided to start working full-time, due to our economy's bad shape.
At first, I thought it would be great: my daughter would meet other babies, play, learn to socialize, follow a schedule, etc...; after being sick for almost 10 weeks in a row, with one sickness after another, I knew there had to be something more that I could do! I was not just going to sit around and just "let this pass". So I asked my doctor what I, as a parent, can do to build up my child's immunity. His answer: "if you must have her in daycare, nourish her body with the best nutrients possible and she will start to build up her own immune system". After all, all I wanted was for my baby to be healthy.
My endless research began: where can my baby get the best nutrients possible? What can I do? What am I feeding my baby, and is it the best thing for her? Jarred baby food was convenient and she liked it, but was it really the most nutrient-dense food for her? Probably not.....I researched the power of raw foods and veggies and the vitamin/mineral content in each fruit and vegetable. I also researched organic vs. non-organic, is there really a difference? Wow, did I come up with answers! I read about real people being healed of ulcers, skin conditions and even cancer from consuming non-processed, organic raw fruits and vegetables. If eating this way can heal adults of such serious conditions, imagine the wonders it can do for my baby's immune system! So, the world of puree began!
My first step: I purchased the Baby Bullet. This was my personal choice, as a regular food processor will work just fine. However, I chose the Baby Bullet because of the "Dial Date" containers it comes with which you can set the date you prepare the food and freeze it: perfect for us "busy moms" who like to make a batch of baby food for 2-3 days at a time.
Second step, off to the grocery store I went! But, instead of stocking up on baby food jars, full of preservatives and sodium, I stocked up on organic fruits and veggies, lots of them! I took my time in picking the top of the bunch: veggies with unblemished skin and fruits without any bruises and that smelled fresh.
Third step, making my daughter's baby food myself! Wow, was I surprised how creative you can get! I started to create unique recipes that combined flavors and texture. The process of making her food was easier than I thought: it literally takes me about 15 minutes to prepare a nutrient-rich yummy meal for her. My daughter's favorite is organic sweet potato, carrots with a dash of cinnamon and organic baked apples. So it's been 6 weeks since feeding my baby good, wholesome food and not a sign of sickness! She hasn't had a cold, ear infection, sinus infection, skin rash, or thrush since. And, not to mention, her sleep patterns have been much better. And yes, these were the illnesses that she had upon starting daycare, ALL of them! The old saying "you are what you eat" has never meant more to me than now. After all, we all want our little ones to bee healthy!!!
