How to Teach A Baby to Read

There are many different ways to teach a baby to read. It's becoming even more popular to teach a young baby to read right away when they are a few months old.

Children learn very fast, especially in their infancy. This puts us in a great position to teach them the skill of reading.

How Can Reading Benefit my Baby?

Reading is a great way to help with the development of speech and communication. Reading allows your baby to hear different sounds and make connections with different letters that form words. It allows them to form the language skills that will help them get their point across. Reading also helps children learn about human interaction. Different stories set up scenarios that allow babies to see different relationships. By reading with you, your baby is learning how to express themselves and bonding with you.

Reading will also help your child academically. Research and studies show that reading is a great foundation to other subjects in school. It will help in the long run with formal education.

Reading benefits your baby also in the form of concentration and discipline. Being able to sit for a few minutes and read a book will help your child separate play time from serious time. It will help your baby gain a longer attention span and help their memory as well.

Reading can also be a fun time for the two of you. It gives you and your baby a chance to bond and interact with each other.

As your baby gets older, reading will help them understand different situations in life. Such as becoming a big brother or sister, or starting school or losing a pet. Books can help a child understand new life changes.

Some parents are way nervous about teach a baby to read. Some believe it is un-natural and even harmful. Some parents believe that it robs a baby away from it's childhood; a time where they should explore and learn in their own way.

In some ways, I agree. Just because your child learns to read before they start school doesn't mean they will be smarter. But teaching them at a young age also doesn't necessarily mean your doing harm either.

I believe it's best to just encourage and not force. Forcing is what can do the damage. Make learning fun! They will enjoy it and may actually retain everything better. There is nothing wrong with your baby learning how to read early. The benefits are all above.

Just work with them at their own pace and if they aren't ready yet, it's okay. They will be one day. It's more important that they play around and enjoy reading. Let them pretend and imagine. That is what will help them later on. When they are older reading will be very important. When they can enjoy it as babies, they most likely will enjoy it as teens and adults.

How to Teach a Baby to Read

For a baby, reading time shouldn't be too complex. It should be fun! It's most important to do what your child enjoys.

Read with your baby- while your child is an infant (birth to 1 year) you should read books with mostly pictures and lullabies. Books that have sound and textures. Try reading 3 to 5 books per day or how ever many your baby can stand. But make sure you ready everyday!

Let them see you reading- Babies like to imitate and they want to do what they see mommy and daddy doing. It's important that we are examples for our children because they do what they see.

There isn't too much you need to do for your young baby. Between birth and 1 years old your baby is too young to get into the nitty gritty of reading.

Once your baby is a toddler you can start following different reading programs and regimens to advance them in the reading skill.
