Parenting Tips For Toddlers: Proper Types Of Encouragement
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

In my last two articles, I discussed the importance of encouraging your toddler and tried to give you some ideas for things you might want to encourage them to do. Now, I want to give you some ideas I came up with for proper forms/types of encouragement. I want to give you some good encouragement incentives, some parenting tips for toddlers that you may want to keep in mind when rewarding your toddler.

I'm sure you know the basics for encouragement and rewards. You do the cheering, clapping, and familiar praise when your toddler does something you've instructed them to. Another good one? High fives. I know that may seem a little silly but, I've found that for some reason toddlers seem to love this. I know my son does. He does something I've asked or encouraged him to do, and he knows that after I'm done clapping he gets to give me a high five. Once I realized how much he loves this, I tried to do it only as an added incentive for when he achieves his task. It's like he knows that once he's done what Mom asked, he gets to play this little game he loves so much but, he has to accomplish his goal first.

Then, high fives might be something you do all the time or something your toddler doesn't really care about so, let me give you a couple more parenting tips for toddlers. Something that most parents know but, sometimes forget to do is make the task into a game. If it's fun, playful, and gives your toddler your direct attention odds are your toddler will relish in it. The best part about this is that you can pretty much turn any task into a game. The key is to keep it simple but fun. Like the high fives example. Maybe try swinging or jumping games; swing them into the air once or twice or maybe jump up and down with them while holding their hands. Toddlers tend to have a lot of fun with those.

Be creative and fun with it. You may think these are stupid and silly ideas but, remember these are the kinds of things that toddlers love. The crazy, loud, and goofy games are the best at this age because your toddler isn't very sophisticated, it sort of brings you down to their level.

When it comes to parenting tips for toddlers, the next is probably the most important. I now want to convey to you one form of encouragement or reward that you want to avoid at all costs. You never want to use food as a reward or incentive. Teaching your toddler to expect food as a reward for a good deed can lead to unhealthy eating habits. You want your child to eat when their hungry, not just because it's convenient to offer them a tasty snack that they enjoy as a reward. Remember the saying eat to live, not live to eat? It's the same with your toddler. By the time your toddler is this age, I'm sure your pediatrician has already conveyed the point of creating healthy eating habits now, so you don't need me to grill that point.

Well, that's it for now. I'm sorry if this particle article didn't really give you a lot of fresh ideas for how to reward and encourage your toddler but, when it comes to this topic the best person to come up with ideas for your toddler is you. You are the best judge of character when it comes to your own child so, rely on that. Find ways to entice and reward your toddler to do things that you know they like. And if these things stop working after a while, continue on through trial and error. I'm sure I listed ideas that your toddler may not be as interested in as mine is so, trust your own judgement. That's the best you can do for your child.
