Teach Your Toddler Chores, And Then Sit Back And Watch Them Do Them!

This is by far my favorite article to write as I am enjoying the entertainment of my toddler sweeping the kitchen. I am going to give you some advice on teaching your child to do chores. The kicker is that, to your toddler, it is all fun and games. (Maggie pauses to have a big belly laugh) You will learn to make cleaning fun for your lil munchkin as well as incorporate excellent, long-lasting values into their daily activites.

First of all, it is just plain cute to see your toddler doing something semi-productive while they enjoy it, right? The benefits of learning the value of cleanliness at such an early stage in your toddler's life are never-ending. They learn that it is not a bad thing (which will come in handy when your toddler becomes a rebellious teen). They learn responsibility which will help them through their entire life. They learn that to be a member of a family requires particpation and team work. They learn that helping mommy with the chores means that mommy will make sure you're fed. I'm just kidding on that last one, but it sounds nice, right?

The easiest way to teach your toddler to clean is to lead by example. Make sure you explain to them what you are doing and invite them to tag along. They will be watching and trying and before you know it, you will catch them doing it without you.

A fun way to get your toddler cleaning is to help them clean up their toys while singing a song. You know the song. "Clean up, clean up, everybody, everywhere. Clean up, clean up, everybody do your share." If your toddler is in daycare or preschool, chances are, they already know this song. They will eat up the fact that mommy and daddy know it too. You can make up your own songs too, but the clean up song is easy and a good start.

Another way to teach chores is to make a game out of it. You could pump up the music and you and your toddler could dance and clean at the same time. Toddlers love dancing. My daughter loves it when I "shake my booty" (she says it just like that) while I sweep. Another game you could play is to pretend you are a different animal for different chores. IE: The turtle picks up the toys on the floor. The lion puts the books away. Etc. Etc.

I hope you enjoyed reading this article as much as I enjoyed writing it!
