The Holidays Are A Great Time to Sign

With Christmas just around the corner I am sure that you are feeling the hustle and bustle of the holiday season! If you are signing with your baby or toddler, the holidays are a great time to sign! There are so many opportunities to teach your child a new sign or to reinforce signs that you have been learning with the sights and sounds around you as you celebrate this magical season. With all of the activities and events that you take part in during the holidays make sure that you take advantage of the opportunity to point out signs to your tot.

Here is a list of signs that you can teach your baby or toddler this holiday season:

  • Light
  • Tree
  • Cold
  • Snow
  • White
  • Ball
  • Please
  • Thank you
  • Excuse Me
  • Gift

While you are driving around or strolling through your neighborhood and admiring all of the beautiful lights and decorations that you and your neighbors have on display, take a moment to point out the sign for "light" with your little one as they are oohing and aahing over all of the pretty colors and flickering lights.

You can be sure that your child will see a lot of beautifully decorated trees this time of year so take a moment and point out the sign for "tree" in your home, the mall or anywhere you go where there are Christmas trees on display. In addition to "tree" you can also point out the sign for "ball" while your child is admiring all of the ornaments on the trees. Many of them are bright and shiny which is sure to gain the attention of your little one.

Now that is December and winter is upon us, it is a perfect time to sign "cold" with your child. He or she will be able to experience the cold first-hand when you step outside and feel the brisk air on your face. If you live in an area where there is snow, you have an opportune time to teach your child the sign for both "snow" and "white." If you are outside you can point to the packed snow or make a snow ball or point out the snow flakes that are falling from the sky. This will teach your child the different variety's of snow. If you are feeling adventurous you can teach your child how to combine 2 signs at once by signing "snow" "ball."

Holiday meal time is a perfect occasion to practice manners. Throughout the meal make sure you sign and say with your baby the words "please," "thank you," and "excuse me." Another way that you can teach "thank you" is when your child receives a gift from someone. You will not only be teaching them the sign but you will also be teaching them manners and that it is important to thank someone for a kind gesture. In addition, with all of the presents that your baby or toddler will receive this year, it is a great time to teach them the sign for "gift." You will have plenty of opportunities to teach them about gifts when they see the nicely wrapped boxes underneath the Christmas trees of places that you will visit during the holidays.

Between shopping for gifts, going to parties, cooking and baking holiday treats and more, you may be feeling like there is not enough time in the day to complete everything let alone teach new signs to your little one. It is important to remember that babies and toddlers learn best from seeing and experiencing the signs as they take place and it only takes a moment to point them out as you are spreading the holiday cheer!

Happy Signing!
