When Do Babies Usually Sleep Through The Night?
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

If I had a dime for every time I've heard this question, or read it online, or read it in a book, I could buy my baby one very fancy crib!

Truth is, it's a very silly question. It's like asking 'What time do adults usually go to bed?'. Everyone is different and sleep habits are just another attribute which makes up who we are.

But if you really need an answer, 9 months is quite common.

Some babies do not experience regular night wakings from a very young age, like from 10 weeks old. And if you are a parent who used to cherish your minimum 8 hours of beauty sleep every night before baby came along, you would be quite thankful for such a baby.

For the rest of us, getting up throughout the night just becomes normal and manageable. And usually night wakings become more predictable and less often as your infant becomes a little baby, and easier still as your little baby becomes a big baby.

Now if you are the proud new parent of a 4 month old, and suddenly he/she sleeps right through until morning, enjoy the rest but don't get too smug! It's quite common for the little angels to sleep more, without waking, during certain growth spurts, and then return to their usual night wakings. (sorry!)

You may also hear that 3 to 5 months is a normal time for babies to start 'sleeping through the night', but be warned: for some reason, some deceiving experts decided to classify 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep as 'sleeping through the night'. Really?! Five hours? I guess that's the take what you can get approach. I'm holding out for 8 hours, thanks.

If you're really suffering from sleep deprivation, talk to your doctor. Lack of sleep can really take its toll and you may not make the best decisions under such duress. There's a lot of varying advice out there but please be weary of any that suggests doing something totally different in your baby's routine or something that is not suitable to your baby's age, in an attempt to get more sleep.

Well, hopefully you weren't looking for something set in stone here because when it comes to babies' behaviour, there are no definite answers, and thank goodness for that, because who would ever want to be so predictable?!

Rather than hoping for something that may not happen for a while, you may just want to try managing the schedule you and your little one have developed together. Knowledge is a beautiful thing, so do a little educational reading and talk with people whom you respect, that have been down this winding road of early parenthood. You might pick up something really useful that helps you achieve happier nights.
