And What\'s Mom\'s Choice?

One of my favorite clients, a very powerful and rich woman, once confided in me that having children was one of her biggest regrets in life. Short of this, I believe people would prefer to be with family. I believe love conquers all, I believe that being a part of life, contributing whether to child care or laundry has amazing health benefits. I think if everyone felt loved and loving it could change the world.

I just read an article (AARP) that says only 4% of baby boomers would want to live with family once they need day-to-day assistance or ongoing health care . What? There is no indication where the numbers come from and personally, I don’t believe it. Many, maybe most health problems realized by seniors could disappear with the appropriate attention, love and activity. The option of aging in place the article goes on to state is the preference of 82% and 9% would prefer Institutional living. (I can only imagine the preference of the other 5%.)

Grandma brings dinner back

Some research has been done on the amazing effects an elder in the home has on children and teenagers; 80% less chance of a teen doing drugs, better social skills and fewer behavioral problems. The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse has credited the family dinner with kids' avoidance of alcohol, drug, and tobacco use and Grandma brings dinnertime back.

In the last 10 years alone, the number of multigenerational households has almost doubled and the credit is almost exclusively given to finances. It’s true, Medicare is a mess, they are cutting dollars, the facilities serving Medicare clients are struggling and with payouts dropping even more, quality care will be harder and harder to find with the increasing population of seniors.

But that focus will not change the world. As a large global community we need to rethink our aging strategy. We need to change the consciousness of society and make acceptable that which has only been unacceptable in the last 50-60 years. We need to really understand that the important things in life are not things.

I spoke to my friend’s mother who sold her house and moved in with them and she talked primarily of relief. She said it was such a relief not to have to worry about the yard and not to have to worry about the maintenance of the house. She said being around her 12 year old Granddaughter and getting to know her has been one of the most amazing experiences in her life, she didn't understand the importance of listening when her daughter was a youth.

Maybe the other 5% want to live in a commune or a cruise ship or maybe in an Australian Granny Flat.
