Baby Boomer Definition

Forget about “Big Brother” watching you. Forget about viruses, spammers, and hackers. Forget about photo radar or ghost cars. There is something larger lurking out there that makes all these others pale by comparison…

…it’s us…the Baby Boomers!

...the largest generation going and to be found in every nook and cranny the world over. With over 76,000,000 members we are the largest and most influential citizens to be found. And we’re not getting older…we are getting stronger!

So how do you define this group? How did we come to be? Typically born between 1943 to 1964, we have many reasons how we came to be:

  1. Post World War II had something to do with it. The men returned, took up jobs and insisted on “reproducing”.
  2. Women, who were working during the war, returned to their homes and agreed to the reproduction idea. Being a housewife was “cool” and the thing to do (please, don’t throw any tomatoes; I’m only sharing what might be the truth).
  3. To accomplish #’s 1 and 2, marriage became the “in-thing” to do…and they “doed-it”.
  4. The economy picked up, meaning houses and cars (and food) could be purchased.
  5. Families with 4 to 6 to 8 kids became the norm.

…and Baby Boomers were born…literally! But we’re not babies anymore!

This group grew up and aged through the decades and has now become a force-to-be-reckoned with…and marketed to. Given that they were born between the years of 1943 to 1964, and it is now 2013, this enviable group is now between the ages of 49 to 70 years old.

• We are often the senior leaders, if not the CEO’s, of companies (I’m not one, not sure what happened).

• We are typically the world leaders prancing about for all to see us in our adulthood.

• We are known as “empty-nesters” – kids have or are moving out and leaving us alone in our houses that are surprisingly still standing.

• We are “the average Joe” as well; working mid-management or front-line jobs that pay the bills and redecorate our houses.

• We are world-travelers that love to globe-trot the continents and be spoiled and pampered by those who welcome us…and our Boomer money.

• We are also the destitute and the homeless and the nursing home patient…it’s not all grandiose and rosy.

So has this article helped define us? I hope not. Do you have a better understanding of the inner workings of a Baby Boomers mind? I hope so. We are constantly evolving and renewing ourselves. While maybe our first computer was an expensive deck of cards that we only played solitaire on because we were afraid to “push the wrong button”, we are evolving into computer whizzes and “mature geeks”.

By our very definition we are “Booming” our way onto the world stage, our travel agent’s bank accounts, and onto a copywriter’s dream sales letter. A great many of us have the resources, the time, and the desire to be “taken advantage of”. It is our desire…our quest…our pleasure.

We were spawned from a war, put up with large groups of irritating siblings, bought and paid off our homes, watched our children leave (sometimes gladly), and are now looking at what we might do next.

Definition of a Baby Boomer…"We Do It Our Way"...and we are "Re-Booming"!

Nice one! I am a baby boomer then! I always thought it was those born just after WW2, but I see it extends to 1964, so I can count myself as a baby boomer! Very cool.
