BOOM! We’re here…Baby Boomers are alive and well and…surfing the internet. Move over you X, Y, and Z Generations, your parents are here.
The advent of the internet introduced the world to instant communication and information. It replaced encyclopedias, gave us electronic books and gave us immediate access to our favorite musicians, actors, and news. It also gave a whole new meaning to “distant” education and other ways that we could improve ourselves.
The internet was perfectly constructed for the nimble minds of the younger generations and for those that were more technologically inclined. Whether by PC, MAC, tablet, or smart phone, information and communication became instantly available and subsequently exploded.
But wait…there is a storm brewing on the horizon; a distant thunder that is approaching faster than the bullet train in Japan. Check your browser, check your email, and check your text messages…Baby Boomers are on the internet!
• We’re surfing for our next travel destination
• We’re blogging about our lives and experiences and more importantly our kids and grand kids
• We’re talking, whether through online chat rooms, forums or email/texts, and on social media
• We’re buying the latest gadget, education, or life’s necessities
• We're taking over
Have you ever taken the time to type in Baby Boomers in a browser, on Facebook, or on Twitter? You can even try Pinterest…and you will find us. I recently discovered a group on Twitter and within 30 minutes had followed at least 30 groups or individuals. I didn't have time to continue searching and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised that there were so many of us Boomers out there. And that we are talking to one another.
One thing you will note with any Boomer websites or blogs is the quality of the experience. The writing is excellent, the compassion is genuine, and the products are typically targeted for the age group. And there are all types of sites where Boomers are taking care of each other:
• Elder care
• Retirement planning
• Sandwich generation
• Boomer humor
• Fitness tips and programs
• TV and radio
• Scam warnings
Baby Boomers grew up in large families and have brought that experience and understanding to the larger worldwide web family. In today’s “frantic rush and instant gratification” society, Boomers bring that calming, steadfast attitude and surety that comes from years of living. If any generation knows how “to chill”, it’s us.
The storm has arrived and it’s “pouring Boomers”. Someone has finally recognized that we’re also a market to be reckoned with and more and more advertising and campaigns are directed to us. Websites, marketing, and products are designed for the Baby Boomer and our wallets. With some 76,000,000 of us in the United States alone we are getting noticed.
Oh, and it’s assumed that we have disposable income but please don’t try and scam us…we weren't born yesterday!
I love it ... being a baby boomer myself, I make is a priority to keep up to speed with the latest! No way I am going to be left behind :)
Thanks. We may not move as fast but we can certainly figure out this technology...I think :)
Let me say: I LIKE YOUR ATTITUDE! I had no idea that Boomers had a such a forthcoming way about them. Hurrah!
Certainly is a large group that are "catching up with the times". Thanks for reading.
