Have you heard of the Baby Boomers? Of course you have! They represent approximately 76,000,000 million of the world’s population. Born between 1943 to 1964, this group of people are a force to be reckoned with…and they are getting closer to retirement. And this group of people represent a lot of money, influence, numbers and these Baby Boomers make choices!
Their kids are growing, moving out, going to post-secondary…having their own families. Sure, we've all heard of the empty nest depression that parents may experience. To have such busy households with other kids coming and going as well as their own, to be running to this recital or that game, to be constantly cleaning a tornado-stricken house. And then it’s all gone! The house is empty, quiet and two people, or one in some cases, look at each other and wonder what they will do now.
Oh sure, Baby Boomers kids’ education needs to be financed, hopefully an education savings plan of some sort can be used. But for many Baby Boomers, they take it upon themselves to continue to assist their kids…much to their children’s relief and chagrin. Will they never free themselves from their parents? Do they really want to?
But still, the house is empty, quiet…and full of memories that will be cherished. But Baby Boomers are getting over it.
What choices are they making? Well for one, they’re going to Baby Boomer Travel Websites and taking a look at what else might be out there. They are welcomed with open arms by travel agents worldwide. They have money…they want something exotic…and they have time.
Baby Boomers are hitting the beaches, the castles, and the jungles of the world…to name a few. They want lavish, expensive, and their kind of fun when they head out their front door to go on the next great adventure. After all, the kids are gone; the house is quiet…who better to spend their money on now!
The Baby Boomer World Traveler… you will likely see one near you.
What other choices are they making? Causes! They are attaching themselves to people and events but more importantly to what are becoming Baby Boomer causes…this includes social issues, animal rescue, and disaster relief. The numbers of causes available to Boomers are many, and they are contributing both in time and with money. They have realized that they can make a difference and know that in their numbers is power.
And they are talking to each other, whether in person, signed petition, the internet, or creating and attending events to bring awareness. They will be heard and they will make a difference! Oh, interesting note: there is also “Baby Boomer One-upmanship”. It’s the old “keeping up with the Jones’s phenomenon…you know, “My cause is greater than your cause” or “Anything you can do I can do better”. Be that as it may, they are getting involved and they are making a difference.
So at the end of the day why is it important to understand that Baby Boomers are making choices, even those few mentioned above? Because they represent such a significant part of the world’s population and have the ability to spend a lot of money, influence popular social thinking, and bring change or help where it’s needed.
Baby Boomers make choices…and the world is moved.
