“Where have all the Baby Boomers gone? They were here just a century ago.”
Don’t bother looking for us Baby Boomers in old gutted log houses or in run-down neighborhoods from times when we needed something cheap to raise our families in. Don’t bother looking in "the old places" because Baby Boomers have moved on…and not to the “other side”…yet.
1. We’re living in modern homes: whether it was before the kids moved out or after, we have upgraded our accommodations to those modern, even computerized, houses that still smell of fresh paint and newly sodded yards.
Some of us even have a plan of attack: move the kids out and move ourselves up. Why not, we have worked all of our lives and surely we deserve this…right?
2. We’re traveling the world: There are tons of travel agencies that want our business and want to ensure we “fly with them” when exploring the four corners of the world. They offer us specials and discounts, and it’s not just because we’re seniors, as well as offering us group travel and all the niceties that Baby Boomers deserve…right?
Resorts are pandering to us and our particular likes and dislikes…and peculiarities. If we arrive as a couple they like to treat us like we’re honeymooners. Or perhaps we travel as a group or arrive at a group resort so we can associate with other Boomers. After all, the young are too fast, the middle-aged are raising their kids (snicker, snicker)…but we are just right for each other. Same way of thinking, similar memories…and we move at the same pace…relatively. And the resorts want to help us do that.
3. State-of-the-art communication: Does anyone remember the days of the “party-line” phone connections? You shared a line with two or more neighbors and had to wait until they hung up before you could use the phone (and we never eavesdropped…right?) Then we got rotary phones and 5 inch floppy-disk computers, and car-starters.
We moved into the internet and are finding not just our own niches but our own dominant websites and social media pages. Why, we are even targeted by the online make-a-lot-of-money hucksters who thought we were born yesterday and would throw our hard-earned money at them (actually, and unfortunately, some of us have thrown our money away and will never see a dime of it back. We’re all suckers at some time or other).
Our generation has seen so many changes in this world and has had to adapt numerous times, sometimes quicker than we wanted to. We have been continually challenged but, for the most part, have risen to the occasion and we have succeeded.
Now you will see us enjoying our fancy new homes, wheeling our luggage as we embark on our adventurous journeys…and texting or video-conferencing our families and friends to gloat about all that we are doing. After all, we’re human…right?
Baby Boomers have moved on…not away!
