There are various over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs or medication for back pain available in the market. Over-the-Counter Medications (OTC)
There are two primary types of OTC medication for back pain namely – Acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Acetaminophen usually works by sending signals to the brain not to feel the pain. NSAIDs on the other hand help lessen the development of inflammation which is one of the components of most back pain.

Prescription Medications
The OTC medication for back pain is also available in prescription strength which you could only gain access by getting prescription from physicians. In addition to the prescription strength, there are also other types of medication for back pain given by doctors. Most common types include –
COX-2 inhibitors – This is the type of NSAID which helps delay the process of inflammation although it is categorized under different risk factors. Celebrex is the most popular form of COX-2 inhibitors which is considered a little harmful to the gastric lining. Recently, FDA called for further research as new information showed that it potentially increases risk for cardiovascular issues.
Muscle relaxant – This is a group of drugs that can result to sedation and relaxing effect to the body.
Narcotic agents – This medication for back pain is given only when the episodes are extreme. However, this drug is potentially addictive which should only be administered under the supervision of a qualified physician.
Anti-depressants – Apart from being a drug used against depression, some anti-depressants are also prescribed as a medication for back pain which is chronic in nature, insomnia and anxiety disorders. The most common anti-depressant prescribed for chronic pain is the SSRI or the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors.
