Do You Have Work Related Low Back Pain

This is a subject that is very important to me and it is something that I have had to look at closely. I found that my work environment was contributing to my low back pain.

If you sit at a desk and use your computer all day, you may need to address this issue yourself. If you don’t currently have any low back pain, you may have it in the near future or if you already have low back pain, you may find that it is getting worse.

Pain is a message that goes up your spinal cord to your brain. It is a message that something is wrong. Sometimes you know why you have pain. If you were playing baseball and you rounded third and twisted your ankle, you would have pain in your ankle and you would know what you did. However, when you have back pain, it is not always easy to determine what is wrong.

Let’s look at your work environment to determine if anything you are doing might be causing your low back pain.

First, examine your chair. Ideally, your chair should have wheels so that it is easy to move around. Also, make sure that your chair is on a chair mat and doesn’t have one wheel on and two wheels off of the mat. This will cause an imbalance in your muscles and will ultimately cause you to have back problems.

Something else that will cause an imbalance in your muscles is putting the phone between your ear and your shoulder. This will cause issues with the vertebrae in your neck and ultimately your back. If you need to use your hands while you are on the phone, get a headset.

If you are sitting for long periods of time, this is not good for your back. Every 30 minutes you should move around, get out of your chair, stretch and walk around.

Make sure that your monitor is at a height where you don’t have to look down at your work. You should be looking straight across at the middle of your monitor. This will keep your neck straight and you will also be able to sit straighter and have better posture.

Consider putting a foot rest under your desk for your feet. This will take the pressure off of your leg muscles. When you sit for long periods of time, you shorten the muscles in the back of your legs and this will cause a muscle imbalance.

If you need to correct any of the above, you could have work related low back pain.

These are just some of the things that you can do while you work to take pressure off of your back and ease your low back pain.
