Exercises for the Back

Many people forget that exercises for the back can generally improve the problem area as the method progresses. Typical response to back pain is usually rest or reducing activities that will worsen the condition. While this is an understandable approach, it can actually slow down the process of healing. Therefore, with proper exercises for the back, healing is usually hastened by rehabilitating the spine.

When done through a controlled and progressive way, active back exercises can help distribute nutrients to the soft tissues and disc spaces to keep the joints, muscles, discs and ligaments healthy and flexible. Through regular and gentle exercise treatment, back pain will reduce in severity, recurrences and duration.

You should remember that the exercise regimen depends on the specific diagnosis and level of pain you felt. Each patient therefore will undergo different sets of exercises and rehabilitation to properly address their back problem. It is important that you consult your physician or specialist who has been trained to customize programs on back exercises. They can also provide you instructions on how to use proper posture and techniques.

For effective exercise treatment, back pain should be well-managed and thoroughly examined by a specialist prior to the commencement of the comprehensive regimen. One of the most common components of a balanced workout for back pain is “stretching exercises.”

General Tips for Stretching

Most people with back pain problems usually benefit from stretching exercises usually for the soft tissues around the back, legs, buttocks and spine. Our musculoskeletal system is made of contiguous muscles, tendons and ligaments which are designed for full range of motion. If you limit this range of motion, it actually worsens the back pain. Here are some tips when choosing stretching exercise treatment –

• Always wear clothes that you are comfortable of

• Avoid forcing your body to reach difficult positions

• Transition from one position to another should be done gently

• Avoid bouncy movements which will risk tearing of muscles

• Stretch on a flat plane where you can move slowly and freely

• Allow the muscles and joints to loosen up by holding positions between 20-30 seconds

• Stretch positions should be generally repeated 5-10 times

As previously mentioned, you should consult a physician or a specialist first before you begin any exercise regimen. It is important that any underlying medical condition should be determined that will prevent you from doing the treatment procedure. Exercises for the back can and many times is a very effective treatment for back pain.

Dealing with back pain can be very frustrating and exercises for the back can sometimes provide some relief during this stressful time. Like anything else be sure and consult with your doctor when looking for a back pain cure.
