How To Get Rid Of Your Muscle Knots

What are muscle knots? Muscle knots, also known as trigger points, are knots in your muscles. Here is a visual of what they look like. Imagine your muscles are like hair. A normal muscle will look like long, silky strands of straight hair. If you have a knot in your muscle, it will look like someone took your long silky hair and twisted it.

What this muscle knot or trigger point does is it slows down the flow of blood through your muscle. As your blood slows, and your muscle gets less oxygen and the trigger point gets bigger.

How do you get rid of muscle knots?

First, I want to give you an overview of what they are and why you get them.

There are many reasons why you can get muscle knots. You could be using your muscles too much or you could have been in an accident which would have created an immediate trigger point. But, the major cause of a trigger point or muscle knot is stress.

When you are stressed out, your muscles are tense which leads to a reduction in blood circulation coupled with not drinking enough water and being sedentary or sitting in one position too long.

A trigger point can actually “refer” pain to another area. What this means is that you could have a trigger point in your back and you would feel it in your leg. The message of pain travels along the nerve from the trigger point.

How can you determine if you have a muscle knot or trigger point?

If you feel a hard spot on your shoulder blade, you need to check your other shoulder blade. If you feel the same hard spot on that shoulder blade that is a bone. If you don’t feel that hard spot on your other shoulder blade, then you have a muscle knot on your shoulder blade.

Trigger points are very painful. They can cause false heart pain, headaches, neck pain, tennis elbow and numbing in your hands and feet.

You can have nerve pain and trigger points in the same muscle. The trigger point pain will cause you to move in a certain way, so that you will avoid the pain. When you do this, you develop muscle imbalance and then develop a nerve pain. You then create a vicious cycle avoiding one pain and creating another.

How do you get rid of your muscle knots? To get rid of your muscle knots, you need to seek professional advice, someone who is familiar with working on them. A medical doctor won’t be able to help you, neither will a chiropractor. A physical or message therapist who is specifically trained in working with trigger points will be the only person who can help you.

You can help yourself by getting rid of the stress in your life, working on your muscle imbalances and eating a healthy diet.
