Trigger Point Treatment You Can Do Yourself

Did you know that you could have lower back pain and it may not be your back that is causing the pain? Likewise, you could have pain in your neck and it may not be your neck that is causing you pain. Did you also know that your pain could be caused by trigger points? What are trigger points and how can you treat them?

Trigger points are tiny contractions or knots in your muscles. They occur when you overwork or injure your muscles. The muscle fibers get over-stimulated and they “lock-up” and this is what is causing you pain.

Trigger points can also occur from poor posture and repetitive movements. If you sit at a desk all day long, you probably have poor posture. Also, you probably do the same movements over and over again. You are a ripe candidate for pain from trigger points.

These trigger points can actually cause back pain, neck pain, headaches, even carpal tunnel syndrome and fibromyalgia. If you think you might have arthritis in your neck, you may just have pain from a trigger point.

Some symptoms of trigger points are also nausea and dizziness. These are things that we don’t normally associate with trigger points.

There are bad things about trigger points and some not so bad things about trigger points. I will get to the bad first.

You may feel pain in your neck but that may not be where the trigger point is. Trigger points are sneaky little things. They can actually “refer” a pain or send a pain to some other location in your body. You might have pain in your hip but the trigger point could actually be in your back that is sending the pain to your hip.

Yes, this sounds complicated. If trigger points are sending pain around to different parts of your body, how will you find the trigger point to stop the pain? Well, this is one of the not so bad things about trigger points.

These trigger points occur in very predictable locations in your body. You can locate them and then “unlock” the muscle fibers. Then, your pain will stop.

The best and really only way to stop the trigger point from sending the pain is to massage the trigger point. The correct trigger point treatment is massage. Massage will relax the muscle thus getting rid of the trigger point.

But, one thing you have to remember is that rubbing the area that hurts won’t get rid of the pain. Massaging the trigger point will get rid of the pain.
