Use Of An Inversion Therapy Table Can Be A Suitable Alternative To Surgery

Many suffer from chronic back pain and often think that their only option to relieve the pain is through surgery or medication. Although effective, there are other avenues to explore that may provide the desired relief without the pain and recovery time associated with surgical intervention.

Surgical spinal decompression is usually implemented in one of two ways. The first is through a surgical procedure where the surgeon removes either a portion or all of the offending tissues. The first is minimally invasive and the latter is considered to be invasive and requires more recovery time. Either way, surgery is usually a last resort for those whose lives have been significantly impacted by chronic back pain.

Another less invasive way to relieve back pain is through inversion therapy. There are now some centers that are dedicated to the relief of back pain through the use of inversion tables that use computers to control the angle and force of the inversion process. What this does, in effect, is to stretch the spine to a certain degree so that the space between the vertebrae becomes widened and hence relieves pressure on the discs in between. The discs in the spine act as shock absorbers so that the bony portions of the spine have a cushion between them. Over time, use and gravity work to push the vertebrae down where they begin to apply more pressure on the discs. In the case of bulging discs, this added pressure only exacerbates the pain because it begins to put pressure on the nerves surrounding it. This pain can become debilitating and will increase over time.

Inversion therapy can be done in a doctor’s office but can also be done at home with an inversion table. Most start out with short periods of inversion until they become accustomed to the sensation and learn what works best for their particular situation. The general consensus is to start out slowly with minimal inversion in the beginning. This way the angle can be increased gradually and over time to establish the optimum settings and time frames for each individual. With regular inversion therapy, most people can begin to engage in activities that they were once unable to do.

Some claim that they have received emotional benefit from inversion therapy but this requires further study to validate. There are some researchers that believe that this improvement in mood and overall sense of well being is due to the relief of chronic pain more than it is a direct effect of the inversion therapy. There are those who swear by its emotional benefit and many engage in inversion therapy who do not suffer from chronic back pain.

Inversion therapy may not be appropriate for all types of back pain. However for those that have degenerative disc disease or bulging discs, the use of an inversion table has proved to be a safe and effective way to find relief from chronic back pain.
