What Causes A Bulging Disc And What Can Be Done To Treat It?

In most cases, a bulging disc in the spine is simply a result of damage that is caused by normal wear and tear that occurs as we age. This weakening of the discs in the spinal is not uncommon and most people over a certain age show signs of degeneration.

This is not normally a problem until continuous or chronic pain debilitates the person to the point where they are unable to perform day-to-day tasks. Patients are more likely to suffer from pain where the degeneration is due to repetitive motions or “over doing it”. The bulging disc on its own does not usually cause pain. The pain occurs when the pressure from the disc compresses the surrounding nerves or spinal chord. Unfortunately, gravity only serves to contribute to the pain by pushing the vertebrae down and providing addition pressure to the bulging disc. The area between the disc and the vertebrae becomes lessened by this compression.

There are several treatment options depending on the severity of the pain and the nature of its origin. In most cases, this pain can be alleviated through a conservative approach with moderate activity. In cases where the moderate approach fails to bring relief, then other options should be considered. In severe cases, a doctor may recommend surgery to correct the physical abnormality that is causing the pain.

One of the less intrusive methods of treating lower back pain caused by a bulging disc is by inversion therapy. Inversion therapy simply uses gravity and the patient’s own body weight to “stretch” or open the space between the vertebrae. This allows the offending disc to return to its normal position between the vertebrae and helps to reduce the pressure it causes to the nerves and spinal chord.

In some cases, there can be secondary pain as a result of a bulging disc. Sciatica is a condition that results in the patient experiencing pain through the legs and feet. This is from pressure on the sciatic nerve, which originates in the lower back and when irritated, the pain from this nerve can then travel to the legs. This is often manifested as a dull ache, tingling or burning sensation that is often worse when someone is at rest. Inversion therapy also helps to alleviate this pain by removing the pressure that the disc is applying to the sciatic nerve.

There are some contraindications however and those with high blood pressure, glaucoma or heart disease should not use inversion therapy without first consulting with their physician. This is because while inverted, blood pressure goes up and pressure within the eye increases dramatically. Additionally, the heart rate slows while inverted. Beyond these precautions, however, inversion therapy is considered reasonably safe.

Chronic back pain can keep many people from enjoying an active lifestyle. The use of an inversion table on a regular basis might help to keep the space between the vertebrae open and the chance of nerve compression less likely. If a patient is not yet at the point of needing surgery, then inversion therapy might be a viable option to find relief from back pain caused by a bulging disc.
