The fact that most people will experience lower back pain at least once in their life is not beyond reason. After all, aches and pains are a part of life, right? Before you answer this question, take something into consideration: Next to the common cold, back pain is the leading cause people under the age of 45 miss work. It is also noteworthy, that back related disorders happen to be the most common work-related injury.

In many cases, back pains arise for no apparent reason. No bodily injuries, such as those that occur because of an overexertion on the body brought on by athletics. Neither have there been any changes in daily routine. So what is the cause behind the startling statistics? According to research, a large part of the reason is connected to lifestyle. It is a fact that certain lifestyles foster an abnormal strain on the anatomy, strain which may not be immediately felt but take a toll on the back over time. Lifestyles that are at the top of the list for back related disease are sitting for hours, being overweight, living under abnormal stress, smoking, or failing to get sufficient exercise and sleep. An old, worn out mattress might cause back pain as well.

In addition to lifestyle, some occupations are the cause behind developing back pain. Occupations that involve heavy lifting, bending or twisting are most frequent. Back pain has also been linked to work that involves excessive repetition, such as that involved on assembly lines. Also on the list of occupations which foster back disorders are those that require the operation of certain equipment, such as jackhammers. Heavy equipment operators are on the list, as are truck drivers, furniture movers, construction workers and janitors.

Additionally to disorders to back disorders brought on by lifestyle and occupational excesses, back pains are often the cause of structural maladies. This would involve bulging or ruptured disks, sciatica (a compression or irritation sciatic nerves), arthritis, or, osteoporosis (bone loss) to name a few. These disabilities cause muscle aches, shooting or stabbing pains that radiate down your leg, and limited flexibility, such as an inability to stand straight.

In spite of these alarming statistics, there are measures which can be taken to minimize back maladies. Lifestyle or occupational changes may be necessary in order to reverse the negative trends mentioned above. Also, some simple home treatments and proper body mechanics may be considered. Modest changes often result in removing an otherwise need for surgery! Get a new quality mattress for back pain. If you are over weight, consider loosing weight. Weight loss reduces undue pressure on the spine. Good posture is also a part of being a friend to your back. This may require you learn proper posture and bending techniques. Other precautions involve the avoiding of lifting heavy weights, reducing stress; quitting smoking (which narrows the blood vessels and leads to a decrease in the amount of oxygen and nutrients that reach the spine), and finally getting the proper amount of sleep and exercise! In order for the body to improve mobility and strengthen muscles exercise is a must!
