Why Are Core Muscles So Important?

Your core muscles are what you use to keep yourself upright when you're walking, keep you from turning into a plate of jelly and are the foundations for every movement you make throughout the day. So why are core muscles so important? Well let's look into it!

What Are Your Core Muscles?

Well these are the muscles that make up your abdomen, your sides and your lower back. These muscles include:

• The Transverse Abdominis– Deep side and front abdominal muscle

• Erector Spinae – the muscle that runs down either side of your spine

• Obliques – muscle at the side of your front abdominals

• Lower Latissimus dorsi AKA Lats- The broadest muscle in the back

What Do They Do?

These muscles act as stabilizers for your entire body. From when you are walking down the road to picking up the groceries, your core is used to make sure your body is steady and able to perform the tasks needed through your day to day life.

Why Is It Important To Train Your Core?

What some people don't understand is that the core is completely separate from your abdominals. Although they make up part of the core, your abdominals just allow the flexion of the torso (the crunch movement). The core muscles are a group of muscles that act as a natural girdle for the body to make sure it doesn't place the body under an unnecessary strain.

Making sure you have a strong core means your body will be able to cope with the daily stresses and strains more easily. This means you won't feel so achy doing the regular activities you would normally do throughout the day. One of the most common problems as a result of a week core is lower back pain. If you suffer from lower back pain you should consider doing from core training to strengthen it so you suffer no more.

OK, So What Are Good Examples Of Core Training?

Any exercise that requires you to work on your balance is a good core exercise because you have to engage the core to stop yourself from falling over. This is why stability balls, or fit balls, are good for core workouts. The unstable ball requires you to engage your core to stop yourself from falling over.

Another good example of core training would be bodyweight exercises. Doing bodyweight exercises means you are using your own body as the resistance. To do this you have to tighten up your body when performing moves like:

• Press ups

• Pull ups

• Plank work

• Russian Twists

All these require you to engage your core so you can perform the exercises correctly and safely. You can find good bodyweight exercises all over the internet so have a look around and find some that you can do to strengthen up your core.

Make sure you have a strong core so you can make life that little bit easier! It only takes 20-30mins, 2-3 times a week to make sure you're protecting your body, especially your lower back, and stop yourself feeling tired all the time.

Unfortunately some people just ignore core exercises when training or do it the wrong way. Hope this article helps those.

Great article Luke, I used to train up to 4 times a week when younger I loved doing side crunches and twists. My obliques used to really sit out from my ribs. Alas I haven't been to the gym in over a year and my core is starting to feel the effects. I really need to start again. Thanks for the post.

That oblique popping look is just awesome. With a good calisthenic workout routine you don't need a lot of core specific training in your weekly regime because most calisthenic exercises work your core anyway.

Great article Luke. I kinda wrecked my lower back working in a hard rock mine when I was 16. Later I had a disc rupture, which required surgery to clean up. I get a lot of regular exercise like upper torso, chopping firewood, hand milling grain, kayaking etc. Legs get a lot of walking, hiking and cycling. I have never been able to stick with calisthenics for core though. Are there any actual activities akin to what I have mentioned that you can recommend for core?

Chopping firewood is great... really squueze the stomach as you're chopping. If you're walking/hiking a lot, take a backpack with you with a bit of weight and really focus on your posture. This will engage your core nicely. Any sort of calisthenic exercise will help with your core. If you're not doing any sort of workouts and like upper body workouts, something as simple as 2 sets of pushups when you wake up and go to bed will help work the core. Take about 1-2 mins rest between sets... This could be the time you spend making the morning coffee. Press Ups, flick the kettle on, once it's boiled, more pressups ;)

This is an article after my own heart, Luke! Staying fit is one of my passions and core work is an absolute must. I know what it's like to having flabby, weak core muscles to having a much stronger core. So, I'm right there with you when it comes to encouraging people to work on their core muscles. Great job!
