“Carlos Zambrano Considering Retirement”

Carlos Zambrano abruptly "retired" on Friday evening after a miserable performance vs the Atlanta Braves. Following the game he cleaned out his locker and told his friends that he was "retiring".

Make no mistake about it, his performance last night was horrible. He gave up 5 homeruns over just 77 pitches in 4 2/3 innings. He imploded after giving up a homerun to Dan Uggla. The next batter he faced was Chipper Jones. He threw two pitches so far inside that Jones had to do everything he could to get out of the way. It was pretty clear what his intentions were with those pitches. Umpire Ted Timmons ejected him after the second pitch and a stare down with Chipper Jones. Turner Field hasn't been his favorite place to pitch. Last year on opening day he gave up 8 runs while lasting only 1 1/3 innings.

What was really surprising about this incident is that when Jones and Zambrano had their stare down the Braves dugout began to empty while the Cubs remained on their bench. This is clearly a team that does not have his back and is fed up with his antics. It's tough to imagine a contender taking him off their hands.

His teammates seem to have mixed feelings about whether or not he'll be welcomed back if he chooses to return. Several players have said that he would be welcomed back while others have refused to comment. My money says the ones that won't comment are the ones that don't want him back.

Personally, this is not a guy I would want in my clubhouse. The Cubs should suspend him without pay for the rest of the season if that is an option. Keeping your emotions in check is part of being a professional baseball player. If he's actually retiring he did them a huge favor. They won't have to pay the inflated salary that he is still due. In my opinion though he's not going anywhere. He's a mental case but he's not dumb enough to walk away from all that money. This seems more like it was just a cry for attention than anything.

Sorry Cubs fans. I think you're stuck with this guy until the bitter end.
