How To Hit to the Opposite Field

Drill for Opposite Field Hitting

Hitting the ball to a opposite field is a indication of a well-informed and discipline hitting. It is an significant aspect of the game. A hitter who is able to do so is a hitter that is able to get the big hits in the clutch for his or her team. Hitting a pitch the other way takes fortitude, timing, bat control and good recognition.

The good pitcher knows the pitch on the outside of the plate is the most difficult pitch for a batter to hit solidly and be able to drive. This is why so many hitters get out on this pitch. This pitch also is usually swing on and missed, ground out or popped up. It's the pitchers out pitch to end the ending.

If the smart pitchers know this, and the good coaches know this also, and so why are there not coaching drills for their hitters to have accomplishment at the plate against this strategic pitching? These practices are not emphasized enough in batting practice. There are methods you can choose to use to get the results we want. Choose the drill that works best for you and your players..

1) HITTING OFF THE TEE DRILL

A hitting tee works well for practice hitting the ball to all fields. I suggest the 5 point tee. Hitting cage works also very well when used properly. A soft toss machines are excellent tools also, but nothing simulate the game like live pitching on the baseball diamond. The batter gets a true perspective of where his or her ball has been hit, as related to the ball field.

There are those who feel the development in the batting practice work best in these stages;

1) The Tee

2) The Side Flip

3) Soft or Short Toss, Opposite Field and Live Hitting.

SETUP FOR DRILL

Right handed batters: Set up a screen about 12-15 ft. in front of home plate. Set up another screen on the right side of the field 25 ft from home plate 12-15 ft off 1st base foul line. Left hand batters place a screen on the left field line same distance as used on the right field line.

TECHNIQUE

Place the hitter in the box, with the front foot even with the middle corner of the plate. The ball should be toss underhanded just off or on the outside corner of the plate. Spin can be put on the ball to replicating a slider or a breaking ball. The hitter will be given as many as 15 swings and as few as 10 swings each. The goal is to hit the screen every time. At the beginning most young hitters don't do well at this drill the first time, but with time they usually become better, with intensity and practice.

The batter stand in the batter’s box about midway of the plate with their front foot aligns even with the middle corner of home plate. No matter where the ball is thrown their stride, stance and position in the batter's box is to be maintain, the same throughout the drill. Where the contact is made with the ball in relative to the plates what we are striving for here. A pitch outside should be contact back further on the plate, somewhere near the back corner of the plate.

The ball has to be hit on the inside area in order to be hit to the opposite field.

This drill should be practice every day.

INSIDE THE BALL HITTING

It is easier for the hitter to see where they should hit the ball, using soft tossing the ball. As hitters get better at this drill they can even start aiming at the top half of the inside of the baseball. Doing so should increase their odds of hitting the ball harder, line drives or ground balls in the opposite field with regularity.

Don't give up on the drill I can't stress this enough. Stay with it every day. The first time you apply the drill it's going to be frustrating for everyone involved. There will be failure. Some hitter will experience lots of pulled balls, weak pop-ups, swings and misses, hang in there. Everyone should as to participate even the power hitters can benefit as pitchers will get better. Stay with it the rewards are great for all, you as a coach and your players in the batter's box and on the score board where it counts the most and it is what we are after. Remember practice make better, so keep practicing in time it will pay off.
