A few weeks ago the Texas Rangers All-Star outfielder Josh Hamilton struggled with his addiction recovery. Hamilton went out to a bar in Dallas, Texas with his friend. During dinner Josh had a few drinks with his meal and did not think anything of it. However, when dinner was over Hamilton continued to drink alcohol and he did it on the down-low. Everyone was unaware that Josh was sneaking drinks, he was somehow able to elude his drinking from the crowd. Is Josh Hamilton on the verge of collapsing and reverting back to his drug-using days?
First of all, addiction is one of the most severe mentally tough diseases to overcome in the world. Many addicts who have attempted to-remain clean almost always have a relapse at some point. It is like a full-time job in-order-to-remain clean, no matter what the circumstances are. Let's not forget that 22 million people in the United States have substance abuse or dependency issues. It is a world-wide issue and many people struggle back and forth with this disease.
We all know that Josh is-tormented with the every-day stressors of the life of an addict. I also remember last year when fire-fighter Shannon Stone fell to his death on a foul-ball that Hamilton tossed to him. I believe Josh is-riddled with guilt over that unfortunate incident. Now, Josh has tried to help in many ways with the grief-stricken-ed Stone family. We all know how hard the death of a family member can-be and how much it weighs on you.
I am sure that Josh ponders over this incident daily and is over-whelmed with guilt, as he feels responsible for the incident. Of course, we know that the accidental death of Stone was not Hamilton's fault. However, circumstances like these can-not-be defined so easily as right or wrong. Guilt is a very powerful emotion and in my experience there is only one thing can cure guilt. In situations like this one, time is really the only solution that can heal the mind and soul.
I believe Josh is a very strong-minded-individual and with guidance from Jesus, he can overcome his issues. Josh's beliefs in the Lord will help guide him on the right path and pro-vide great insight in these troubling times. Many people feel a lot of compassion for Josh in his time of need and we should stand behind our fellow-man. I can only imagine how hard this must-be for him and my thoughts and prayers go out to him.
In conclusion, before we judge him we should remember that nobody is perfect and every-one makes mistakes. It is how we deal with those mistakes that makes us stronger and wiser. Thankfully, Josh has a great support system and that is very important in moments like these. As time passes by things will get better for Josh Hamilton and will be able to play the game he loves with a clearer conscience. Until than all we can do is stand behind him and give him our support.
I have also had some experience with addiction and I feel for Josh I hope he can get thru these tough times. My prayers are with him and I hope he continues to playball b/c he is very good. I will never forget what he did at the HR Derby at Yankee stadium. He put on a clinic, it was just amazing! Great article
Thanks Allen, addiction is underrated greatly, many people don't understand just how difficult it is. I will never forget what Josh did in Yankee stad. either, that was amazing!!
I feel for Josh b/c I have been there myself. i used to be addicted to pills and it was the worst time of my life. Thankfully I am much better now, but I know what he is going through. People think your a piece of dirt and look at you as a weak person. I wish they could walk a mile in your shoes for the people who have this DISEASE! Thats what people don't understand that it is a disease, sometimes people can't help it.
I agree Josh, my bro. was an addict and in recovery for a few years now. At first I didn't understand it either, but after some research I do believe it is a disease. It's a shame how many people are addicted to drugs and the doc's just keep comin out with more drugs to get people addicted too. It's amazing how the gov't just keeps approving these new drugs, you would think they would put a stop to it, considering the epidemic it has become.
How I feel for the Man, addiction, a world wide problem requires so much self determination. Hope for his sake he has it.
Yes, I feel for him as well. The weight on his shoulders is enormous right now and he has a lot to overcome.
I agree that we should not try to judge Josh during his relapse and recovery. From what I understand he had remained clean and sober for quite a long time prior to his recent relapse. I'm sure he can overcome this and get back to long term sobriety.
Let's hope that he is able to get back on track and sustain his MLB career. Because he is very talented with the baseball.
