Every year the controversy of expanding instant replay in the sports industry is-discussed considerably. Especially, in the playoffs many fans believe that several critical blown calls in key situations has decided the outcome of the games many times. It has become a very sensitive issue since most people would prefer to implement-additional replays in the game. However, there are also some fans who oppose it as well. So, how do we resolve this issue so both sides are-satisfied?
In Major League Baseball the umpires make the correct call 99.5% of the time. That is a very-accurate percentage and it should erase the doubt that most fans have in the umpires. However, it seems like the .5% that the umpires end up missing, happens to-be the crucial moments in the games. These deciding moments in the game often-determine which team is going to win. That is why this discussion keeps emanating and generating a great deal of dissension in the sports community.
Baseball is not the only sport though, just this past year in the National Football League there were many blown calls by the referees . Furthermore, the officials actually reviewed the replay on the screen and still got it wrong. Somehow they missed the call and unfortunately it ended up effecting the outcome of the games. Although, sometimes the missed calls do not decide the outcome of the game. For example, in the New York Giants versus the Green Bay Packers playoff game this year there were several substantial botched calls.
Thankfully, the calls that were-made against the Giants in the Packers favor did not help the Packers win the game. Although, at that time it seemed like it was going to play a significant role in deciding the winner. Even on the biggest stage in the world, with the best referee's in sports there will always be missed calls that will-constitute doubt in the officiating system.
When Tom Brady was-penalized for a safety in the Super Bowl, several sports analysts criticized the penalty and believed the refs blew the call. Did that safety have an impact on who won the game? We will never find out because the game is over and what's done is-done. Many people believe the human error involved in the game is another way to make the games more authentic and entertaining. There are many mixed feelings on this matter because many feel that replay should-be used more in the game.
In conclusion, if we manipulate instant replay again will it make the game better? Evidently, it will not considering that there will always be the-possibility-of human error. Obviously, they must discover another way to-ensure that the referee's and umpires get the calls correct. Until we are able to-ameliorate this flaw in the system, there will always be controversy in the way the game is-called.
Great article! Hey we keep modifying the rules anyway, why not do it again. Obviously, it still has some flaws and we have to get it to the reach the best possible results. I don't think we will ever get it right, there is always going to be the human error involved in the game.
Thanks Allen, I don't think they know what they are doing. It's hard to get it right I guess and as long as humans are involved there will always be human error to deal with.
They definitely need to modify the rules again, b/c there are still big plays that decide the outcome of the game that the refs/umps are getting wrong. Especially in the playoffs you don't want to see the wrong call. Great article!
Thanks Josh, they have modified it a lot already, I don't know what more they can do without changing the game and causing more problems.
Instant replay is here to stay and should be developed to provide the correct call in any game. We have the technology and we are already using it. Some of these refs are not in the proper position to make a call or at least the right call. It will never be perfect, but what is? Believe me in Detroit we have seen bad calls happen on numerous occasions that have had an impact on the out come of the game. I vote for instant replay and hope they even make it better. But as someone mentioned earlier, let it not slow the game down where the other team ends up with an advantage. Give Robert a tweet and see if he can get an instant relay because I am. Thanks Robert.
In our country Cricket has now started to use technology, a team has recourse to 3 TV replays for a decision, if they are correct they do not loose a call, if incorrect they loose a call. In Rugby technology is used if the on field ref is indecisive he may call on the TV ref to make a call. This has saved many a blatant error that could change the outcome of the game, but only the Ref can call for it. I am all fore using technology for decisions, but not to the extent that it slows the flow of the game. When sport was played for fun a Refs incorrect decision had no effect. Today with professionalism paying huge amounts of money the outcome of a game can affect the income of the players. So I say if you got the means to check use it.
It's great that they check it on the replay tv, but somehow they still get it wrong. Sometimes I think that its fixed and Vegas has a lot more power than people think.
I would suggest that the real beauty in any sports event is the imperfection that occurs. If we continually try to make the game perfect, eventually it won't be a human experience at all.
I agree with you a lot, but I just hate it when the officials blow a call and it ends up deciding the outcome of the game.
