The Baseball Heart Guard

How it all started

When my wife bought baseball heart guards for the kids when they started little league I thought what a waste of money. All it was was a hard plastic shell with a couple of straps. Didn't look like much. I thought who couldn't catch a ball off the bat of a twelve year old or at least deflect it away. I made them wear it though for my wifes peace of mind if nothing else. After the first couple of times the arguments ceased and the kids wore them without being told.

Fast Forward

Two years later my son was selected for the 12u allstar team as and eleven year old. In the second game of the district tournament he was called to the mound to pitch the last two innings. Not expecting to pitch he'd worn his white sleeves under his jersey. After a couple pitches the umpire asked him to remove them. In the dugout as he was redressing he was in a hurry to get back out there and didn't want to hold the game up. He wasn't going to put his heart guard on but I insisted telling him there was no hurry take your time. After returning to the mound, about 10 pitches in, the batter hit a line drive back to the mound striking him in the chest. It hit him hard enough to knock him off his feet. He layed there flat out for a couple seconds and I headed toward the mound. As I did he jumped up and threw the runner out at home from his knees. After the play I walked out to see if he was allright. He was fine, the ball had struck his baseball heart guard on the left side of his chest. The ball never even left a mark. He finished the game striking out the next two batters which is funny because he couldn't find the strike zone before he got hit. I guess it gave him something else to think about.

Final thoughts

In the year previous I had gotten lax on making my pitchers wear a baseball heart guard. I guarantee I'll never let a pitcher throw without one from now on. In the five to ten seconds it took for everything to take place I went through a range of emotions. My first thought was he was dead it hit him that hard. When I seen him get up I was relieved and to find out he was ok left me thankfull that we spent the extra twenty or thiry dollars for the baseball heart guard. Had he not been wearing the guard he probably would have been done for the tournament at the very least. Maybe even affecting his game for years to come. If you ever have a young ball player I strongly suggest purchasing a baseball heart guard. You never know when things can go wrong.
