Ball Handling Drills

Good ball handling is required if you want to be a good basketball player. If you improve your ball handling you will get better looks at the basket and you will be able to set up your teammates. Everybody wants to get Chris Paul handles but not everyone is willing to do what it takes to have them. I'm going to talk about a few basic ball handling principles and drills.

Basic Ball Handling Principles

  • Your body should always be protecting the ball this will help you avoid turnovers.
  • You should not be looking at the ball while you dribble it, you need to be looking at your defender and your teammates.
  • The ball should be kept low when you have defense on you this helps you avoid turnovers as well.

You should always dribble with your fingertips and not your palms.

Ball Handling Drills

  • Circles

Circle the ball around your legs, behind your back and around your head. Start with your legs then move up.

  • Crab walk

While walking bend your knees and put the ball between your legs as you walk.

  • Alternate speed

Power dribble with your right hand about ten times then dribble it soft 5 times and repeat. Do this with your left hand as well.

  • Sit down and dribble

Find a chair and dribble the ball while sitting down. Alternate hands, dribble it behind your back and behind your legs. Try and dribble it quickly.

  • Develop a crossover

Dribble with your right or left hand and quickly switch the ball to the other hand. Crossovers can be a very effective way to loose a defender.

  • Develop a spin move

If your defender is playing you tight doing a spin move is a great way to get rid of him. A spin move should be preceded by contact with the other player.

Final thoughts

These ball handling drills will get you in the right path to becoming an advanced ball handler. Like I always say practice makes perfection. If you don't like to practice then you probably shouldn't be playing basketball, or any other sport.

Good ball handling is one of the key elements of winning basketball. If your team can't move the ball effectively you will loose a lot of good scoring opportunities. If you already have a good understanding of ball handling and can handle the ball well you should do some advanced ball handling drills to become a great ball handler. Good luck on your journey and remember to work hard at it and you will succeed.
