When your team outrebounds the other team, your chance of winning increases. When your team outrebounds the other team by a lot, you have a very good chance of winning. Defensive rebounding decreases the number of possessions the other team gets. Offensive rebounding increases the number of scoring opportunities your team gets. Isn't it a favorable picture to see your team being effective at rebounding? This article describes what you can convey to your players so that they become really good at rebounding, one of the crucial basics of basketball.
Defensive rebounding: all 5 of your players box out an opponent and then go eagerly for the rebound. They continue after the ball wherever it goes until the ball is secured by a player. Your players chase after ball until it goes out of bounds. Every rebound brings a valuable possession to your team and takes away a valuable possession from the other team. Once your player has the ball, he/she should put it under the chin and have the elbows out. This makes it more difficult for the opponent to knock the ball out of your player's hands. Your player can also pivot away from the opponent.
Offensive rebounding: all 5 of your players go for the offensive rebound every time your player takes a shot. The reality is that many shots are missed, especially at the younger levels of basketball. Your players are to sprint to a position in front of an opponent, so that they have an advantage in reaching the ball. Another way to get favorable position is to spin off an opponent to a position in front of the opponent. When all 5 of your players on the court are doing this, your team is going to get a lot of offensive rebounds. This then leads to follow-up shots that tend to be near the basket and thus are high-percentage shots.
Effective rebounders have the right mindset. This mindset includes the following qualities: strong desire for the ball, persistence at going for all rebounds, willingness to bump bodies to get position for the rebound and to take follow-up shots with multiple opponents nearby. When all your players are moving toward being effective rebounders, they are practicing one of the basics of basketball which leads to many wins. Could this be the year when your team together becomes outstanding at rebounding at both ends of the court? When this happens, you will be having a lot of celebrations at the end of games.
