One of the basics of basketball is to move on offense. When all 5 players on offense are moving, it makes it more difficult for the defense to guard. Young players often wonder what to do on offense. This article describes some sound moves that they can make so that your offense is effective. These are solid moves that have worked well since the beginning of basketball. .
First, a player can fake going in one direction and then move in another direction to an open space. This open space should not be near any teammate so that there is not crowding. The player should give a clear hand target indicating that he/she is ready to receive the basketball. If the player does not receive the basketball in 2 seconds, she/he should move to another space.
In moving to another space, the player can set a pick for a teammate, including the ball possessor. If the teammate is not moving, the pick can be set right near the defender. If the teammate is moving, the pick should be set an arm's length from the defender. The player setting the pick should have a wide stance and not move when contact is made with the defender. After setting the pick, the player should turn toward the ball, be a target for a pass, and cut quickly to the basket.
The player can then move to a place near the basket in which the defense might lose track of him/her if the defense is focusing on the ball. The offensive player can then move near the basket to be in good position for an offensive rebound. If a shot is not yet taken, the player can then move to another open space to be ready to receive a pass.
Another good move to make can occur after an offensive player passes the ball. She/he can then quickly move to get open for a return pass. He/she can fake going one way and then cut toward a space where a return pass is possible and not that hard to make. Often the defense momentarily forgets about the player who has just passed, and before the defense can react a return pass to the initial passer can be made.
I hope that these ideas help you. The key to effective team offense is for all 5 players to be moving constantly. That movement must be with the clear purpose of creating good shot opportunities. By doing the actions stated in this article, those good shot opportunities will occur.
All good. Emphasis on cutting to the basket, setting picks and finding open spaces. Move, move, move. Thanks for posting. Chris Kelley - Framingham.
