Basketball Arm Sleeves: Know the most important features for you?

A number of different companies make basketball arm sleeves and they come in a wide range of fabrics, colors and styles. This article is designed to help you narrow down to the exact shooter sleeves that will meet your needs. The most common features found in the various basketball arm sleeves are below with descriptions as well as reasons that you would want sleeves with each particular feature based on your playing style.

Wicking/fabrics

The fabrics that basketball arm sleeves are made out of all have a few similarities. They typically are made from a breathable material that wicks moisture away form your skin during play. This usually means that they are made from a nylon or spandex base. Because of the stretchy fabrics that are used, the fit of shooter sleeves is typically form fitting. This also helps the sleeves stay in place while running and shooting around.

Sun protection

Most basketball is played indoors, especially during the winter months. However, an outdoor pick up game is great when the weather is good. It also may be the case that the only court you can get to is an outdoor one. If this is the case, spending hours and hours in the sun can be bad for your skin. The UVA and UVB rays that come from the sun can cause sunburn and cancer. To stay healthy and prevent sun damage wearing basketball arm sleeves every time you are on the court out in the sun is a very good idea. The alternative would be to remember to always apply sunscreen and reapply at least every 2 hours, which is tough to do. Some sleeves that have UPF ratings of 40+ are specifically made for protecting arms from sun damage.

Padding

Basketball can be a physical sport and as such there is always an injury risk. One of the arm sleeve manufacturers incorporates a hexpad padding system into the elbow of their sleeves. These sleeves really do a great job of providing elbow protection. This prevents bruises, cuts and scrapes from keeping you out of the game. The other nice thing about wearing shooter sleeves with padding is that they protect other players from injury as well. If your elbow accidentally contacts another player then the padding will protect both of you, which in turn means more playing time for everyone.

Color

While color may not be a feature per se, it is worth mentioning because of how many different variations are available now. Many basketball arm sleeves come in traditional black and white but you can also express your personality with the numerous other colors and designs available now. Some sleeves even have designs on them including ones that are flags from countries around the world.

Compression

Shooting sleeves that are made from material that is designed to offer arm compression can be a benefit if you need a little more support for your shot or if you are prone to arm swelling. Some people only use compression for recovery. This is done to reduce post exercise swelling as well as to help more blood lactate be shuttled from the tissues where it is produced into the larger bodily circulation where it will be broken down. The presence of lactate in high concentrations causes muscle soreness so helping this move out of your muscles by wearing compression arm sleeves can reduce soreness and speed up recovery so you can be pain free and on the court in no time.

Custom fitted sleeves

Most basketball arm sleeves are sized in small, medium, large, extra large etc. sizes. But not all of us have arms that fit into one of these categories. While there are variations between manufacturers, people who have arms that are not proportional or that are extra short or extra long may not be able to find shooter sleeves that fit well and don’t get in the way during play. In these situations there are custom fitted arm sleeves that can be found that will fit no matter what size or shape your arms are.

Silicone top band

Shooting sleeves typically stay in place during play but if your sleeve doesn’t fit as well as you like or you want to be doubly sure that it doesn’t sag during the game be sure to purchase one that has a silicone band on the inside of the upper arm portion of the sleeve. These silicone bands don’t pinch or pull, but they do provide enough friction to keep the sleeve as high up on your arm as it is designed to do.

These are the basic characteristics that most basketball arm sleeves include. However, many sleeves only incorporate a few of these features so it is important to decide what is important for you to have in a shooting sleeve. Once you know which features are most important to you, making the decision to purchase on sleeve over another will be much easier.
