One of the most challenging tasks for beginners and coaches is teaching ball handling skills. Dribbling a basketball for young players can be difficult because of the coordination required to control the ball and the size of the ball itself can be a problem. Also, because dribbling is new to many players, the level of frustration and interest required will discourage all but the most motivate. To make basketball dribbling fun and interesting we will discuss several dribbling drills for beginners that are fun to make learning easier.

Before we begin the discussion about dribbling drills there are several key concepts which should be kept in mind and reinforced with each of the following basketball dribbling drills. First, it is important for the player to keep their head up. Second, the player needs to keep their eyes forward; this will allow the player to see the entire floor and defense. Third, use your fingertips to dribble the ball. And finally, the dribble should be at or below the waist, if the ball is dribbled higher than the waist it becomes easier for a defender to steal the ball.

One last note, it is important that we insist that all drills are done correctly. It is critical that we teach the proper techniques to form a solid foundation. As a result, when players lose control of the ball during the drill they must regain possession of the ball and begin at the point they lost the ball and continue the drill. In other instances the player will have to begin the drill again from the very beginning.

DRILLS

1. Form a single line with about five feet between each player across the base-line or half-court line. Each player should have a ball and be prepared to dribble with the right hand. At the whistle all players will begin to dribble with their right hand until they are signaled to stop. Next, all players will dribble with their left hand for the same period of time. Again, repetition will reenforce ball-handling skills.

2. At this point we can progress to a 5 chair dribbling drill, Five chairs or plastic cones should be lined up in a straight line approximately five to eight feet apart. This dribbling drill will begin on the right side of the chairs. This drill is conducted in a single file allowing adequate spacing between players. All players will dribble with their right hand down the length of both sides of the chairs/cones. This should be repeated for the left hand as well but beginning on the left side of the chairs/cones.

3. The circle drill consists of an outlined circle (cones or a painted circle of the floor will work) and all players will dribble within the white circle and try to tap the ball away from the other players within the circle. If a player losses control of the ball or the ball is tapped away they are eliminated from the circle. The other players continue to play until all players but one is eliminated. The drill will now begin again but all players will now use their left hand to dribble and this ball handling drill will continue as before. The players that have been eliminated will continue to practice their dribbling drills in an area nearby.

With consistent practice, basketball dribbling drills for beginners, will become second nature and will increase the enjoyment and competitiveness of the players.
