Dribbling is a way for a player to move around the basketball court and get things done on offense. It is also a way to manuever out of jeopardy when the defense is applying pressure. Sometimes one or two timely dribbles can get a player near the basket for a makeable shot. There are certain basketball dribbling drills which can help a player become accomplished at using the dribble on the basketball court. Players of all different sizes can become competent dribblers when they do the following:
1. Dribble when you are going place to place in your neighborhood, at the park, or when you are hanging out with your friends. Make it a good habit to dribble throughout the day for a few minutes at a time. Frequent practice of dribbling makes a big difference in the long-term.
2. It is important to dribble mostly with the fingers and finger pad, not the palms. When dribbling, please keep your head up, do not look at the basketball, and keep your knees slightly bent.
3. Please practice the following dribbling moves frequently: dribbling with eyes closed while stationary, mopping-motion dribbling, sweeping-motion dribbling, switching hands dribble, hard-fast dribbling. Please practice dribbling with each hand about equally.
4. Learn and practice the reverse dribble, slow-fast dribble, and crossover dribble. The reverse dribble is when a player dribbles with the right hand on a slant across the basketball court, then turns away from the defender while switching hands on the dribble, and then proceeds to dribble on a slant to the left. The slow-fast dribble involves moving slowly with the dribble and then suddenly speeding up to dribble past a defender who is taken by surprise with the change of speeds. The crossover dribble occurs when a player is dribbling with the right hand, moving toward the right of the basketball court, and then quickly crosses over the dribble to the left hand and moves to the left of the baketball court. This crossover happens in front of the dribbler. Doing basketball dribbling drills with these 3 dribbling moves will reap great benefits during games.
5. Please practice the above again and again so that you become real comfortable and confident with the basketball. When on your own practicing, imagine and try using these dribble moves in various places on the court, both to the left and right of the rim. Please resolve to be a strong dribbler with your left hand and your right hand. Please imagine turning away effectively from defenders, abruptly changing direction on defenders, and being deceptive in suddenly changing speeds as you are dribbling.
When you become good at the above basketball dribbling drills, you are now able to utilize the one advantage that the offensive player has over the defensive player and that is, the offensive player knows what he/she is going to do before the defensive player knows it.
