Basketball Rebounding: How To Rebound Effectively On The Offensive End

Offensive rebounding gives your team a much better chance to win. When your players get offensive rebounds, they are giving your team more ball possessions. This then gives your team more opportunities to score. Most importantly, it also lessens the amount of time your opponent has the ball, thus decreasing their opportunities to score. The opponent also has to stay on defense longer, and this could tire them. You can see that offensive rebounding is quite valuable toward winning the game.

What are the keys to emphasize to players so that they can be effective offensive rebounders? Remembering and implementing the 3 A's can be very useful:

1. Anticipate where the ball is going. A flat, fast-moving shot tends to come off the rim straight and fast. A high-arcing shot tends to bounce softly and land near the basket. Shots from the right side tend to come down  the left of the rim. Shots from the left side tend to come down to the right of the rim. As you get to know your teammates' shooting patterns, you can anticipate more where the shots will be going.

2. Active. Be active with your hands to touch the ball, grab the ball, or tap the ball to a teammate. It gets crowded in the area near the basket, so players who get their hands active have an edge, as many players do not do this.

3. Attitude. Have a determined attitude to get the ball on the offensive rebound. Want the ball more than anybody because you know it really helps your team win. Go for every offensive rebound opportunity, even when tired. A good technique is to spin off the first object. This means to spin your body off any player in your way to get the rebound.

A drill I find useful to practice offensive rebounding is to have 5 or more players in the paint. Coach shoots the ball from various spots. As a player gets an offensive rebound, he/she gets a brief rest while the other players contest the next shot. Continue until there are 2 players left. Repeat drill several times to see which players are getting the offensive rebounds early in the drill. Provide reward and praise to players doing well at this drill.

A case can be made that offensive rebounds are as important as points to winning. When your players take pride in offensive rebounding, a lot of good things can happen for your team.

Excellent. I'm going to try that drill with my 6th and 7th graders at practice this evening. I'll reward the guy who gets the rebound by letting him be the next shooter. Chris Kelley - Framingham
