Basketball Skills That Make An Effective Player

There is so much to teach and learn in basketball, especially for the younger players. Wouldn't it be good if we could break it down to the most essential basketball skills, and then convey to our players what those skills are and how to develop those skills. Our players would then have a focus and a plan of practice to develop as an effective player. This article describes the basketball skills essential to becoming an effective, winning player.

First, an effective player is able to catch the basketball consistently and then do something good with it. By catching the ball consistently, the player maintains possession of the ball for his/her team rather than losing it to the opponent. Then, he/she can take a peek to look for an open teammate or an opening for a makeable shot. A quick decision is then made to pass or shoot. John Wooden, the very successful college coach, once said: "Be quick, but don't hurry." This is what this skill is all about.

Then, the effective player must always be moving. Move on offense to open spaces. Move on defense to positions that prevent the ball from scoring. This is a skill that every player can do, without difficulty. Just move. When in doubt, move. Basketball is a motion game. Those who stand around are doomed to fail. Build stamina to be able to move throughout the game. Moving on offense makes it more difficult for the opponent defense to guard. Moving on defense gets the player to the ball so that it does not go in the basket.

Then, on offense, always take makeable shots. A player needs to practice shots so that there are more makeable shots that she/he can make. In games, when those makeable shots open up, the effective player takes these right away. No hesitation. No thinking about it. The makeable shot is there, take it. Shooting confidence comes from practicing makeable shots over and over and making them. And then in the game, having the strong belief that those shots will be made, even after some are missed.

The other side of the coin is the next of the basketball skills which make an effective player: prevent the opponent from taking makeable shots. The effective does whatever it takes(within the rules) to stop the ball from scoring. Be in proper position. Rotate to the ball. Contest potential shooters. Help out teammates. The effective player is crushed when the opponent scores and takes a lot of pride in preventing a score.

Last but not least is to rebound. Rebounding is so important because it gets another possession for your team. Rebound on both ends of the court. Defensive rebounding prevents the other team from getting another shot to score. Offensive rebounding gives your team another opportunity to score. Daily emphasis on rebounding by all players brings great profits to your team.

There you have it. These basketball skills are what make an effective player. It is up to each player and his/her coach to practice, develop, and cultivate these skills to the best of our abilities.
