Beginning Youth Basketball Practice Plans

The initial thoughts of coaching your son's or daughter's youth basketball team seemed like it was going to be fun but the sobering thought of what do I do now sets in and what type of beginning youth basketball practice plans will help establish the foundation for this team.  After all we want to this to be a positive learning environment for your players, their parents, and yourself not only for the moment but also into the future.

Now I know that if you are a new coach or even have a few seasons experience already under your belt, basketball practice plans are no joke, particularly since you are a volunteer coach or have been nominated by your son or daughter.  Your time to prepare efficient practices is limited, you may not have the necessary background to even know where to begin, and now you have become more anxious as practice sessions looms ahead.

Beginning Youth Basketball Practice Plans

Beginning youth practice plans should accomplish these four goals:

1.  What do I coach and what skills should be taught?

Remember you need to have an idea of which skills are immediately important to develop (i.e. dribbling, passing, and shooting) versus those complimentary skills that can be taught later in the season.

2.  Fundamentals

Here we are talking about strategy, tactics, and skills.

3.  Player interest and involvement

Beginning youth basketball while thoroughly enjoyable might become a bit stale and uninteresting to young players because of the necessary repetition to develop certain skills.  The youth of today engage with smart phones, computer games, and other interactive devices that are designed to maintain high level of interests within a short time-frame.  As coaches we need to provide a framework that will engage and hold the interest of our players throughout the season.

4.  Game situations and preparation.

Both we as coaches and players need to be able to respond to the changing rhythm and flow of game situations.  We need to be able to adjust to a tight zone defense, a man-to-man defense, or to a half court press.  Having anticipated and practiced these tactics will make game management much easier and player and team confidence will increase significantly.

Practice Plans

At this point I can hear you saying, all that's good information but what do I do or where can I go to find information to assist in developing practice plans.  One of the best resources that I have found because it is targeted to beginning youth basketball practice plans will accomplish all four of the above goals in an easy and manageable guide focused on youth basketball practice plans.

You will get 30-ninety minute practice plans, exercises, and teaching points plus much more to ensure that you are a well prepared coach.  Your players will enjoy the practices and games more and your parents will view you as great coach that develops the skills of their children.
