Grade School Basketball: An Effective Player

In grade school basketball, there is a great opportunity for players to develop good habits so that they are effective on the basketball court. These good habits develop their self-confidence and can carry with them as they continue to play ball through the years. This article describes the mindset and skills of an effective player, starting on the grade school level.

It all starts with defense. The effective player has a strong determination to prevent the opponent from scoring. This occurs in a zone defense or man-to-man defense as the effective player does all he/she can to prevent and contest makeable shots by the opponent. The effective player has moved into the right position by quickly moving his/her feet as the ball moves. The effective player also helps out teammates on defense whenever necessary. She/he understands that it is a team defense in which all 5 players are responsible for doing what it takes within the rules to prevent a score by the opponent.

Defensive rebounding come into play immediately when the opponent takes a shot. In grade school basketball the effective player instantly gets in front of an opponent and holds that position until he/she secures the rebound. The effective player is willing to endure some bumping and physical struggle to get the defensive rebound. He/she gets the hands ready for the ball, secures the ball under her/his chin, and keeps the elbows out to protect the ball from the opponent.  The effective player realizes the defensive rebounds mean valuable possessions for her/his team.

Then the transition to offense is made quickly. The effective players knows to move quickly to open spaces on the court. He/she knows to do something each moment to make the opponent's defense work and to help his/her team score the ball. Setting a pick, doing a give and go, passing to an open teammate quickly, moving into a space to receive a pass which makes the offense a threat to score are all actions which an effective player takes.

When her/his team takes a shot, the effective player in grade school basketball always attempts to get the offensive rebound. Many shots are missed, so there is much opportunity to gain possession of the ball for another shot. The effective player spins off other players and sprints to the basket to get in position for offensive rebounds. The effective player is determined to be the one to get to the ball first and to go right up for a shot.

In grade school basketball, the effective player excels in all 4 of the above aspects of basketball. Imagine what it is like when all 5 players on the court are doing the above. Wow! It is a beautiful sight!
