Regardless of whether or not the Knicks make the playoffs this year, they have to blow it up! I’ve always liked Baron Davis ever since his UCLA days. Unfortunately, his injuries are plaguing him and I don’’t think he’s going to regain anywhere near his all star levels. Melo spells team with an ‘I’.
The only recent excitement in MSG has been the emergence of one Jeremy Lin, and, the NHL’s Rangers. Knickerbocker basketball has seen an ignominious decline for many years and it’s about time to rethink their model going forward.
Here’s my fix. Send Melo and one of their young guards to Orlando for Howard, send Davis and a pick to the Suns and bring in Steve Nash to mentor Jeremy Lin, and re-unite Nash, Stoudemire, and D’Antoni. Nash pick and rolls with both Howard and Stoudemire, now that would be selling out MSG!
Howard is going to move somewhere soon, so why not let Superman fly in the Big Apple? Nash maintains that he’s in for the long haul in Phoenix but one would have to believe he’d love a chance to rekindle the run and fun offense under D’Antoni especially with not just one, but two capable big men to feed!
Lin’s knee injury will likely heal but perhaps not in time for the first round of the playoffs, provided the Knicks make the playoffs. Either way, Lin could use a mentor like Nash now and in the near future to help him overcome some of the very same shortcomings Nash experienced early in his own career. Namely, high turnover rates and questionable defence.
Why would Orlando trade Howard to a divisional rival? It doesn’t matter why. So what if Howard ends up in the same division against his former team. Orlando was 7-6 against divisional foes while New York was 6-6, essentially a wash, not likely to change just because Howard changes jerseys. In my trade, Orlando gets an all star in Melo, and New York gets an all star in Howard.
By bringing back D'Antoni, the Knicks can bring the Garden an exciting brand of basketball - West Coast run and gun! Stoudemire needs to use his strengths which is low post power and pick and rolls. Howard just needs to be given the rock by a competent point guard. With Stoudemire drawing attention, and Howard drawing attention, Nash can drop treys all nite long!
But the Knicks better do this soon, or others will surely come calling for Howards's and Nash's services!
