In this article, I would like to share with you the basics of basketball giving you the best chance to coach a winning team. When your team progresses on each of these basics, you will achieve more wins for your record. Emphasizing these basics throughout the season is bound to bring improvement in your team. By the end of the season, your players will have a much better chance at becoming consistently winning players against increasingly difficult competition.

The Four Basics of Basketball

1. Catch the ball consistently. On offense, when your players catch the ball consistently, it prevents the other team from gaining possession of the ball. By not turning over the ball, your own team has more opportunity to score. This is one of the basics of basketball which can be cultivated at each practice. The key is to get your players confident in passing to each other and catching the ball. All 5 players on the offense need to be touching the ball in order for your offense to be effective. Along with catching the ball, the next element of the basics of basketball is crucial. It is:

2. Move. On offense, each player is to move to another place on the floor every 2 seconds. Players are to be aware of spacing from, rather than crowding each other. Players can take turns moving to places where they can receive the next pass. On defense, players are also to move often. Every time the opposing offense moves the ball, each of your players moves to be in a good position to defend. Basketball is definitely a game of movement, not standing around. When you emphasize moving, how to move, and when to move from Day 1 to the end of the season, it will have great benefits for your team. On offense, moving leads to the third of the basics of basketball. It is:

3. Take makeable shots on offense. Your players are to take only shots that they have a reasonable chance of making. You learn this from practice and game situations. Many players try to do too much, or they rush shots that they are not really able to make. This hurts your team. It often results in giving back the ball to the opposing team that rebounds the unmakeable shot. Taking makeable shots can help your team build a lead that will be hard to overcome, especially when your team is doing the fourth of the basics of basketball which is:

4. Prevent makeable shots by the other team. Move with great effort to prevent your opponent from getting into position for makeable shots. Contest all your opponent's shots so that they are not as makeable. Implore your players to do all they can on defense to make shotmaking difficult and uncomfortable for your opponent. Whatever defense you teach, will you consider teaching it with the goal of preventing as many makeable shots by your opponent as possible?

There you have it. Those are basics of basketball that, when played consistently, lead to winning. Catch the ball. Move. Take makeable shots. Prevent makeable shots by your opponent. By teaching and emphasizing these four basics throughout your season, you are ensuring that your players become winning players.
