What Do The Los Angeles Clippers Need To Be An NBA Championship Team?

Things were tense for Los Angeles Clippers fans when there was a chance that Chris Paul might sign with another NBA team. Paul himself said that he was exploring other options and did not give such a rosy outlook for his chances of staying in Los Angeles. When Paul finally did sign a new contract with the Clippers, there was a collective sigh of relief from Billy Crystal and the rest of the Clippers fans around the world.

So, now what? The Clippers have their playmaker and they have Blake Griffin and Lob City intact. Is that enough to win an NBA title? The best way to determine what an NBA team needs to win a title is to examine why the team was knocked out of the playoffs the previous year. For the Clippers, everything went south when Blake Griffin was injured and could no longer do those dunks that he is so famous for. But Blake Griffin’s dunks are more than just for show. He intimidates a defense and opens up alleys to the basket that other players could not open. His high-flying acrobatics are actually a key part of the team’s offense. When he could not perform at that high level, the team suffered.

From that analysis, we can determine that the Clippers need a deeper bench. They need players that can come off the bench and pick up the scoring slack when Blake Griffin is unable to perform at his best. The Clippers are suffering from the same problems that the Cleveland Cavaliers had when Lebron James was in Cleveland. If James wasn’t healthy, then the Cavs could not win big games. When James left Cleveland, the team fell apart. That shows that the team relied too much on James, just as the Clippers rely too much on Griffin.

There is no backup plan when Blake Griffin goes down. The same thing happened during the regular season when Griffin first got his ankle injury. Without Griffin, the team cannot score enough points to win games. The Clippers need a big man off the bench who can come in and take over a game while Blake Griffin rests. This would also be the same player who could still help the team put up points while Griffin is injured.

Another thing that the Clippers need is someone who can get inside and rebound the ball, besides Blake Griffin. The Clippers give up too many points because they have no one, aside from Griffin, who can grab defensive rebounds. The Clippers are only one, maybe two, players away from being a legitimate NBA title contender. But as long as they are unable to battle effectively under the boards, the Clippers will find themselves out of the playoffs before the Western Conference finals on a regular basis. If the Clippers can bring in a good rebounder and a good big man off the bench, then this will be a team to contend with in the NBA playoffs.
