A Few Tips To Follow For A Salon Blow Dry At Home

I know. I know. You can NEVER get your hair to look as put together and beautiful as it does when you leave the salon. Sure, it does look better after leaving the salon. They have both hands in your hair and have an all angle view of your hair. Your stylist can get to every hair strand while you have to twist yourself into a pretzel to get it even halfway close to what they can do. Well the truth is you CAN get the salon blow dry you want! Just follow some simple steps and you can't lose!

You want to start with freshly washed hair so you can create longevity with your style. Towel dry your hair and squeeze out all excess moisture. You don't want to blow dry sopping wet hair for you will create much more work for yourself and more damage to your locks. Makes sense right? Apply the styling products necessary for achieving your desired style. A volumizer for fine and limp hair strands, and a cream or gel for the thicker hair that needs taming. All hair under heat stress absolutely needs a thermal protectant so add a small amount of this over your products. Keep in mind, the more product you use on your clean hair, the sooner you will have to wash if you don't wash every day.

Get rough with it. Get your fingers in there and rough dry your hair until it is about 80% dry. Once you get it to this point, section your hair starting on the bottom in the back with about 1-1/2 in. sections. Break out the brush whether it be a round brush for volume or a paddle brush to smooth. Brush as you dry with the dryer held at a 45 degree angle blowing down the hair shaft to ensure smoothness and create shine. ( Ever see smoke when drying? No worries. It's just the product in your hair. It's not your actually hair burning.) Do this until you get all hair dry, then hit it with the "cold shot" on your dryer to help set your style.

If you're satisfied with your look after the blow dry, grab your finishers such as pomades, waxes, putties and a sprays if you use it. If you're the type that needs to add some finishing touches then use your ceramic flat iron or curling iron. Be sure to spray a thermal spray to protect those strands from the heat you apply. Once you've thermalized your hair finish it up with a light, medium, or hard hold hair spray.

Be a tease! Need more volume? I know I always do. Where you want the volume (most of the time at the crown) grab a 1-2 inch section of hair and hold it vertically. A teasing or finer tooth comb is best but a regular comb will work too. Hold your comb at mid-shaft of your section and start backcombing to the root. I was taught it's all in the wrist. Whip your hair like you are whipping eggs.

Do this in as many sections as you like depending on the volume and style you want. Take your backcombed sections and smooth over the top of them with your comb until it doesn't look like a "rats nest." You don't want to comb out all the backcombing you did, just the top. Spray a bit of hairspray to hold your style in place.

The major key to a good blowout is to put in as little effort as possible. You want most of your efforts to go into the actual blow dry and use the heat tools as little as possible. Towel drying as much as you can before you start the blow dry will help so much towards the little effort. A great product is second key to achieving your desired hairstyle. Ask a professional to point you in the direction of products that are right for your hair. Set your hair into place with your paddle brush or round brush and touch it up with your heat tools. Shine sprays and serums are great finishers as they add shine and tame those pesky fly-aways. Your hair should be your pride!
