Benefits Of Coconut Oil for Skin And Hair

Hey Beauty Diva's!

Today I'm going to talk about my new favorite product, coconut oil. Coconut oil has many benefits for skin and hair and has been used around the world for it's healing attributes and ability to nourish the skin. It is anti-aging, naturally protects your skin from UV rays, and can help treat skin problems such as blemishes, eczema, and chronic psoriasis. Virgin coconut oil is the basic ingredient of many hair and skin care products, making it a must have for any beauty addict's skin care routine.

Virgin coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids that are easily broken down and quickly absorbed. These fatty acids strengthen the cells which increase the elasticity of your skin and hair. The breaking down of the fatty acids also helps to prevent fungal and bacterial infections, making it beneficial for people with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Virgin coconut oil is also a fantastic anti-aging tool since it is high in vitamin E, lauric acid, and antioxidants to help fight free radicals. Free radicals harm the skin and speed up the aging process causing wrinkled skin, loss of elasticity, uneven skin tone, and dull looking skin. The coconut oil will penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, strengthening the underlying tissues and preventing wrinkles. It will also help in removing the outer layer of dead skin cells, making the skin soft and smooth.

5 ways I use coconut oil

  • Shaving gel- My legs get dried out very easily, and I have problems finding a shaving gel that is moisturizing enough to keep them from being itchy. About a month ago I started using coconut oil on my legs as a shaving gel and it's worked wonders! This really helps keep my skin moisturized and even gives them a healthy glow.
  • Eye Makeup Remover- This is the best eye makeup remover I've found. Just take a small dab and rub it into your lashes and around your eyes. This will also condition your lashes and moisturize that sensitive eye area. One thing I usually do afterwards is sweep my eye over with an oil free eye makeup remover pad to get the oil off of my eyelid. If you are planning on wearing eye shadow that day the oil will most likely make it crease, so I'm always careful to remove any extra.
  • Chapstick- I put a little coconut oil on my lips to keep them soft and smooth. Since it contains vitamin E and a natural SPF of about 4, this is the perfect lip moisturizer (plus my boyfriend loves how it tastes).
  • Pre-Wash Hair Treatment- Coconut oil is one of the most nutritious products you can put on your hair. It has a high moisture retaining capacity, which keeps hair moistened and soft, and is a great anti-dandruff agent since it deeply moisturizes your scalp. Before your shower, take a small amount of coconut oil and warm it in your hands. Run it through your hair concentrating on your scalp and ends. Remember that the more you put on, the harder it is to get out so use only as much as you need. You can leave it on your hair for as little as 30 minutes or a couple of hours for a deep conditioning treatment. After you've let it soak in get in the shower and wash it out with shampoo. Since water doesn't rinse off oil, you might have to shampoo your hair twice to get all of it out. You can then condition as usual. Do this one or two times a week for soft, shiny, luxurious hair.
  • Body Scrub- An easy way to get an in-home spa treatment is to mix about 2 cups of sugar to 1 cup of coconut oil and rub it all over in the shower. Sugar naturally contains glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin, so it keeps your skin bright and smooth. You can customize your scrub any way you want with essential oils, honey, or any other beneficial skin care ingredient. Here's one of my favorite recipes to make:

  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 Cup White Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Oatmeal
  • 1 Cup Coconut Oil
  • 1 tbsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Just mix all of the ingredients in a bowl or covered container (you will probably have some left over). I love this scrub because it smells delicious and it always makes me feel soft and beautiful. This also makes a fairly cheap and adorable present at christmas time and birthdays. Just put it in a decorative jar and tie it with a ribbon.

I've only listed 5 ways I use coconut oil, but there are several other ways to use this tropical oil that I haven't listed here. For example, on top of being an multi-functional beauty oil, it is also very beneficial to use coconut oil in your diet to help lower cholesterol and fight off infections. So try it out and find the many benefits of coconut oil for your skin and hair.
