Homemade Scalp Scrub

We all take care of our hair any way we know how--but what about the scalp? Regular use of shampoo, conditioner, and hair products can lead to product buildup on the scalp. This buildup can result in hair loss, discomfort, itchiness, and flaking. You also may already have dry scalp, psoriasis, dandruff, or another condition of the scalp. It's very important to properly care for your scalp, just like your face, body, and hair!

I was talking to my hairdresser the other day about homemade options for getting rid of scalp buildup and/or flaking, and she gave me this great tip which I'm about to share with you: a brown sugar and coconut oil scalp scrub!

Coconut oil has many benefits for both your skin and hair, so next time you're near a health food store, grab a bottle--this stuff is fabulous.

Heres the recipe!

You'll need:

  • Coconut oil
  • Brown sugar
  • A bowl
  • A tablespoon
  • A hairbrush
  1. Measure about 2 tablespoons of brown sugar into your bowl.
  2. Measure about 3 tablespoons of coconut oil into your bowl. You want the mixture to be a thick paste, so if it isn't, add more of what is lacking.
  3. Mix them together well.
  4. Brush your hair out very well. Make sure to brush out your roots so you're not running into tangles when you try to apply the mixture to your scalp.
  5. Apply the mixture a bit at a time. I find that it really helps to flip your hair upside down if you have long hair, because it gives better access to the top of your scalp.
  6. Gently massage in the mixture in small circles with your fingertips. Don't be rough with your scalp, or you could irritate it.
  7. Wash your hair well with lukewarm (not hot) water, and make sure to get all of the mixture out.

There you have it! Simple, effective, and smells really yummy. You can always replace the coconut oil with olive oil if that's all you have; olive oil also has amazing moisturizing effects. Both of these oils without the sugar work amazingly as a hair mask, too!

It's important to have a clean, healthy scalp. It's also important to moisturize your scalp, just as you would moisturize your face or body! Doing this scalp scrub to avoid scalp buildup can assist in combatting flakes and hair loss. Allowing your scalp and hair follicles to breathe, as well as massaging the scalp with this regularly (about once a week) will aid circulation and actually promote new hair growth.

I hope you like these homemade beauty tips, and that each time you do them you feel pampered and lovely. Enjoy!
