Me, Myself And EYE - How To Fix Problem Areas

In my search to help to make my eyes look younger and to give more overall appearance of health, I have come across so many "solutions" and claims. Wading through all of this has been a huge task. This is frustrating because who has the time and interest for this - all I wanted was RESULTS!

For me, I wanted a solution that was simple to use, was not based on "secret ingredients", addressed my particular skin issues, and was complementary with other elements of my routine, including special treatment products like I might use for sun protection.

My needs were a product to:

  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines
  • Help to prevent occurrence of more lines
  • Eliminate dark circles under my eyes
  • Moisturize the eye area
  • Make the skin appear tighter and younger
  • be easy to use without lots of messing around
  • Minimize sources of chemicals from animal sources (I am vegetarian by principle)

In my readings, some of the key elements of skin health appeared to by linked to having enough and appropriate antioxidants in, and on the body. Some antioxidants like Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) are easy to get, but are eliminated fairly rapidly from the body and do not penetrate the cells. Another factor was collagen. Collagen can be supplemented (often from cows and birds), but it can be hard to get to penetrate the cells. Inflammation of the skin, especially around the eyes can also lead to further signs of damage. As we age, our skin can discolor, have lower blood circulation, increased dryness and reduced rejuvenation.

With all of this considered, it looked like an insurmountable task to find something that would work for me! I needed a product to:

  • Provide the right combination of antioxidants that would work and stay in the body
  • Provide increased collagen
  • Provide firming and tightening
  • Increase blood flow to the area around my eyes
  • Provide increased skin moisture
  • Provide every-day sun protection
  • Reduce inflammation of the skin
  • Brighten the skin and remove the discoloration of some spots
  • Deliver better rejuvenation of thin or damaged skin.

All of this had to be done in a way that would not be harsh and irritating to this sensitive area.

My research kept coming up with several compounds that seemed promising, but I did need to search for a product that had all of them together to get the maximum benefits.

  1. Ascorbyl Palmitate Yes - you guessed it, it is closely related to Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), but has the advantage of being fat soluble. This is absorbed into the cells where regular water-soluble vitamin C can't get, and is retained in the body for a longer period. It fights free radicals, reduces inflammation, plumps the skin naturally and acts as a brightener to improve coloration. To get the lowdown on this compound without all the marketing hype, I found a good write-up on Dr Lam's website, just google it and you'll find what you need..
  2. Lipoic Acid (or D3-PA or Dithiolane-3 Pentoic Acid) Lipoic acid was described as a universal antioxidant because it dissolves well in water and in fat. It works well with other antioxidants, and synergistically increases their effects. It can be found in certain foods like Brocoli and spinach, and the body even makes small amounts itself. Lipoic acid has an important impact on the way cells process other chemicals. It is also known to dilate the capillaries to increase blood flow and deliver more oxygen to the cells. A non-marketing write-up can be found on the American Cancer Society site - search for Lipoic Acid.
  3. CQ10 (Coenzyme Q10 or Ubiquinone) CQ10 is found in some fatty fish as well as soybeans, peanuts and some other foods we may not get enough of. It acts to block the action of free radicals, shields the skin from the environment, reduces inflammation and dryness, and actually helps increase your own collagen production. CQ10 together with Ascorbyl Palmitate solves the collagen issue, so that rather than adding bird or cow collagen, it helps you make what you need. Another good write-up on the cancer site can be found by searching for Coenzyme Q10.

So armed with the above information, some common sense and time, I was able to find a few products that provided most of what I was looking for, and one in particular that seemed too good to be true (I almost got turned off by the cheesy marketing).

I still kept a few other products in my arsenal; one was for when I was going to be outside in intense sun, I wanted an unbeatable SPF, and the other was for when the pollen (and pet hair) count caused my eyes to become very irritated. But other than that, I found one product that met all my needs, I could not believe it!!!

The selection process was an interesting journey. By applying the thoughts I have outlined in this article, hopefully you will find what you are looking for.

I hope that you will share your experiences with other readers too, and maybe we can all get on with spending our time on something that is actually interesting.
