Why Shouldn’t You Be Afraid Of Honey Calories?

Many people have incorporated honey in their daily diet but some are still in doubt as to whether it can make you fat or not since honey calories are quite many. Every food and beverage that we take in has a corresponding caloric content. A calorie is a measurement of the energy in food.

Every person, depending on their physical activity, has a daily recommended calorie intake. It is very important to meet this to provide the body with enough energy to function properly. Honey is considered a type of sugar because of its sugar content namely fructose and glucose. Therefore, the number of honey calories (22 per teaspoon) is enough to frighten any dieter. Not to mention that in comparison to table sugar, honey contains more calories. Thus, one teaspoon of table sugar contains 16 calories. If these are the only things considered, honey is more fattening than table sugar. However, it is a huge mistake to consider honey a fattening food and a threat for slim figure.

Honey is much sweeter than table sugar so if honey is used as a sweetener, a lesser amount is needed. Thus, the number of honey calories consumed diminishes dramatically. Furthermore, honey is considered a “whole food” while table sugar is a “processed food”. Honey does not only contain sugar or carbohydrates but also vitamins like niacin and riboflavin and minerals which make honey a complete food. On the other hand, table sugar only contains pure carbohydrates. These things considered it can be stated that honey calories are a lesser threat for your silhouette than sugar calories.

The glycaemic index of honey is also very good. This indicates that the sugars in honey can be gradually absorbed by the body resulting to a much better digestion. One serving size of honey is equal to one tablespoon. This serving is equal to 64 calories, with no fat and sodium and a total carbohydrate amounting to 17 grams or 6% of the daily recommended intake of carbohydrates. When we take in honey, its sugar components are more likely to be digested than stored as fat. These scientific facts prove that honey calories are nothing to be afraid of.

For those who worry about getting fat because of honey, they must keep in mind that anything taken in excess is bad for health. If a person exceeds his or her daily caloric requirement, the excess calories are the one stored as fat. Intake of honey is good as long as the total daily caloric intake is within the requirements. Studies have shown that people who include honey in their regular diet do not gain weight. On the contrary the consumption of this sweet food actually stimulates gradual weight loss. For people whose diet is low in sugar, a little extra amount of honey will not hurt.

However, people who have a diet composed largely of carbohydrates, have to lessen the intake of honey because it will only add to the number of calories. It is said that honey is not good for people with diabetes. But, if it is used as a sweetener for food, the use of honey is better than the use of table sugar because only a little amount of honey is needed to reach the desired sweetness. This is why honey is sometimes preferred in baking and cooking.

In general, taking honey of three to five tablespoons a day is adequate but it is advisable to take it at different times of the day without worrying to much about the honey calories.
