Like Lucianno Pavarotti believes, I also now admit that one of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating. Food is a basic necessity of the human body that cannot possibly be opted out of.

However, with the growing demand and need a greater time and effort into our work, it has slowly transformed the feeding process into one of the most misused and in other extremities, neglected activities, which has led to the birth of the brain teaser whether we eat to live or live to eat. Think about it! Which one of the two do you do?

These habits are not without their consequences since they have led to the emergence of lifestyle diseases and conditions such as obesity, malnutrition,acne, among many others.

Much has been said regarding the relationship that exists between acne and various foods, but after years of research and fact finding, indeed sufficient evidence has been gathered that disapproves it as a myth and proves the existence of a link between acne break outs and some of the ways in which we choose to cater for our dietary needs.

Acne is a common condition that commonly occurs in adolescents and young adults where there is excessive secretion of sebum causing partial or total blockage of the pores,It may be due to hormonal triggers, glandular malfunction or excessive fat in the skin waste matter.This leads to inflammation that appears in the form of zits, whiteheads, blackheads or lesions.

Some of these foods have been outlined below and their role in the cause of acne elaborated.

Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs)

Due to the rapid increase in population over the recent past, there has been a great threat placed on food security. This has forced bio-technologists to synthetically produce alternative forms of food that are higher in their chemical content and are grown in laboratories. They have also developed foods and serums enriched with hormones to increase their maturity rate. All this constitutes the daily diet of an average adolescent. With all these, they end up having excessive hormones in their bodies. These hormones will then be so active in the human body, forcing glands to over-work and over-secrete sebum. This results in blockage and eventually acne.

Fatty foods

We are what we eat. This is a simple statement explaining that our bodies are a summation of what we put into them. In simpler words, they work under the principle of Garbage In, Garbage Out. The skin, being a secretory organ, is a passage for wastes such as excess water, excess salts and oils. Therefore, when the body has too much fats and oils, in the process of excreting them through the skin to maintain homeostasis, blockage may occur leading to inflammation.

Dairy Products

By the time this connection between dairy products and acne was made, the link between hormonal imbalance and acne was well understood. Dairy products such as milk are rich in hormones. As explained above, excessive hormones in the body will cause glands to work overtime,leading to excessive secretion of sebum and it later gives rise to inflammation.

Junk food and Foods Rich in Sugar

About 90% of all junk food is made of carbohydrates enriched with sugar, color, preservatives among other additives. As we may recall from our basic elementary science, excessive carbohydrates in the body are converted into fats for storage. A very high intake of these then requires secretion through the skin. This creates an opportunity for blockage of pores which is the process through which acne occurs. Sugar in high amounts also acts as a stimulant. This means that it acts as a trigger for various glands among which the sebaceous gland is found. If this gland is made to over-work, there is over secretion of sebum and eventual blockage.

In fact, to support this, a survey was conducted with its results indicating that acne only appeared among Eskimos when they adopted a Western diet of highly processed and refined foods.

Well there you have it!. Some things may be a little hard to let go of, but remember the wise quote:
