Best Razor To Shave Your Head

In this article I will be discussing the best razor to shave your head with. I will attempt to keep it as unbiased and objective as possible, but let's face it even the best of us tend to favor something a little more due to our own personal interests and experiences.

The words "best razor" will mean different things to different people. To you it might mean the cheapest razor. To another person it might mean the razor that allows them to shave their head the fastest. For people like myself, it might mean the razor that they shave their head with that makes them sound like a bad ass. ;)

I will do my own personal ranking of razors based on different categories. I will only rank razors that I have personally used to shave my own head with: mach 3's, Dovo shavette, straight razor, and the headblade pro. Let's begin.

Cost

If you shave your head regularly then cost can undoubtedly be a major concern. We all know that razors can be pretty expensive. Here's my ranking:

  1. Dovo Shavette - The initial handle costs about 25 bucks. However, you can get blades pretty cheap at a local drugstore and walmart. I'm talking like $2 for a pack of 10. Shavettes take DE blades that are snapped in half, so you're actually getting 20 blades for $2. Not bad, huh? These blades do last for multiple shaves as well.
  2. mach 3's/headblade pro - Mach 3's and headblade pro tied for second. Headblade pro takes a cartridge razor just like a mach 3 does, so the cost is about the same.
  3. straight razor - as much as I wanted to rank straight razors higher, I just couldn't. You can get a straight razor for as cheap as $30. However, you will have to pay to get it honed about twice a year(expect about $30 not to include shipping) or hone it yourself. If you hone it yourself you have to buy wet stones and oil which further increases the cost. Then you have to buy a strop and strop pastes. If you only bought one straight razor and used it for the rest of your life then it might end up being cheaper than cartridges, but once people get into straight razors they tend to keep on buying more and more of them. As a result, cartridges would be a cheaper option in my humble opinion.

Speed

If you shave your head in the morning before work, then how fast you can shave your head can be a factor. These rankings are assuming that you are only shaving 1-3 days of growth. The longer the hair the faster it clogs your cartridge razors leading to a slower time shaving.

  1. Mach 3 - You most likely use a mach 3 or some other cartridge razor to shave your face. Since you have been using it for so long you will naturally be able to shave your head a lot faster with it than any other razor out there.
  2. Headblade Pro - This only comes in second because there is a slight learning curve to it. Slight is probably an exaggeration. With just a few shaves under your belt you'll be able shave your head just as fast if not faster than if you were using a mach 3.
  3. shavette/straight razor - I've grouped these together because they both take about the same amount of time to shave your head with. Starting out there is a pretty big learning curve. You have to master holding the blade at different angles depending on the contours of your head. For me it does take me a significantly longer time shaving my head with a shavette/straight razor than it does with a mach3/headblade pro. If I only used a shavette/straight razor to shave my head and shaved it every day then eventually I could probably get comparable times. However that would take a lot of time and practice.

Ease of Use

  1. Headblade Pro - This wins it by a landslide. It was designed from the ground up to be a head shaving razor. It is a very intuitive razor and is very easy to master. It only takes a couple of shaves to get used to it and is very hard to nick yourself.
  2. Mach 3 - Again this goes back to the fact that you have probably already been using mach 3's and cartridge razors for a while. As a result, it will be very easy to transition to shaving your head with it. However, in my opinion these were more or less designed for your face. As such it is slightly harder to use when shaving your head than the headblade razor.
  3. Shavette/Straight razor - These are razors that have a big learning curve. It can be difficult to master how to hold the blade to shave your head. As such, it's more difficult to use.

Clogging of the blade(Lack of)

To me this is where the straight razor and the shavette really shine and the cartridge razors tend to suck.

  1. Straight Razor - Since there is only one blade there is no clogging of it. The only thing you have to worry about is how much shaving cream/soap collects on the blade. I can do more passes with a straight razor without having to rinse it off than any other razor I've used.
  2. Shavette - There is only one blade in this razor, but it has an insert which holds the blade. Hair can become wedged between the insert and the blade. This is the only reason it's ranked number two and not for first place in this aspect.
  3. Mach 3 - Hair tends to clog between the razors. The more the hair that gets clogged, the less effective it becomes at shaving. Also, with longer hair they clog a lot faster.
  4. Headblade Pro - I find this razor clogs the most. Also the way the razor is designed makes it difficult to unclog the blades by running water over them.

Pure Vanity

This is where all my objectivity goes out the window.

  1. Straight Razor - I think there is a certain allure that comes to shaving your head with a straight razor. If you tell people that you shave your head with a straight razor they tend to look at you different. Ok, they might think you are crazy, but also is kind of amusing in and of itself. Even people who shave their faces with straight razors usually are impressed that you use it to shave your head.
  2. Headblade Pro - This razor has a unique look and feel to it. There also is a certain element of fun which is why I ranked it number two.
  3. Shavette- Not as bad ass looking as your typical straight. Also, the name isn't too manly.
  4. Mach 3 - Let's face it there's nothing sexy about shaving with a mach 3.

As you can see each razor is "the best" in one way or another. You will have to decide what is the most important to you and choose accordingly. I personally use the mach 3 and shavette the most. What razor do you use to shave your head? Why do you use it?

You can't back out now... :P Yeah, there's all sorts of fun ways to shave. There is another razor a DE(double edge) razor also called a safety razor. It's pretty popular among wet shavers. I left it off the list since I haven't used one to shave my head with. However, I was recently at a family reunion and went through my grandparents old house and found some DE razors. As soon as I get it cleaned up I'll try shaving my head with it and see how it goes.

Yikes! Your title caught my attention since my sister shaved her husband's head for a while. Interesting to learn. Me, I used a straight razor for my legs 'til I took out a chunk of one:-) THanks.

"took a chunk of one" that does not sound like fun whatsoever. I've been fortunate not to have had any major cuts so far.
