Makeup primer came onto the scene via make-up artists for the stars and models. It was used for women who depended on and needed their make-up to stay fresh all day. As with all things made for the elite, it took off soon enough with the common folk. Women everywhere wanted the miracle cream that evened out flaws and prevented make-up from sliding off with natural oils.
Before long, with the success stories of the facial cream, came the eyelid primer, lip primer, nail primer and most recently; the hair primer. Yes, we women were so sold on the facial make up primer, that we wanted all things to have a primer coat first. The truth is that make-up primer is really that wonderful!
Using primer before makeup is applied works exactly like paint primer; it fills in the imperfections on the face making the whole canvas more even and easily "paintable". It also allows foundation make-up to stay on longer as it more or less soaks up the moisture. This is especially wonderful for people with naturally oily skin that can't seem to keep make-up on their face long. However, people with any skin tone or texture will benefit from toner as no one's skin is perfect. The end result is not only a flawless face, but also one which requires fewer or no touch-ups.
Is Primer Make Up Safe?
Primer is commonly made of silicone. The silicone works in the primer by not allowing moisture to get past it. In essence, it blocks the oils on the skin from leaking onto the make-up layer. This process also keeps the face from drying out.
Whether or not silicone is safe for the skin or body is up for debate. Many people are on both sides of the fight. However, silicone is found in many other make-up and beauty products. Therefore, if you are avoiding primer due to the silicone, you might want to read the labels on a lot of other beauty items as well.
If you live a more organic lifestyle and are already avoiding silicone and other chemicals, do not fret. You can still wear primer. Many popular cosmetic companies are jumping on the all-natural bandwagon and making products for their natural customers. There are also companies that make all 100% natural beauty products.
Lots Of Brands To Choose From
A company named 100 Percent Pure makes a primer that is 100% natural, 100% vegan, and gluten free. That being said, all natural products do not give the flawless look quite as well as silicone based products. However, skin may eventually be naturally flawless without chemicals added to it every day. It's a trade-off I guess and that's the real benefit of using natural and organic makeup along with pure, chemical-free skincare products.
Makeup primers can get a bit pricey such as the one made by 100 Percent Pure (which is almost $30 for 1oz). However, make-up regulars almost all agree that price does not necessarily equal quality. Some women swear by $7 primer from Wal-Mart. In the end, it will really depend on your preference and what works best for your face. One thing that is for sure is that you, like every other primer wearer, will wonder how you ever wore make-up without primer.
geeez, I am a guy.... so i hope that makeup primer is not the answer. Good article though.
